Fujifilm today announces the opening of its brand new digital ink manufacturing facility at its...

Fujifilm today announces the opening of its brand new digital ink manufacturing facility at its award-winning* manufacturing plant in Broadstairs, UK. The company’s investment in this state-of-the-art facility, alongside an upgrade to its impressive R&D department, highlights Fujifilm’s long term commitment to the wide format digital sector and builds on its ethos of providing its customers with industry-leading solutions manufactured to a consistently high standard.
The new digital ink manufacturing facility has been two years in planning and development, and is the result of an investment of over €4 million, with an additional €2.5 million invested to upgrade the R&D department.
The new manufacturing facility has a footprint of 1800m2, and is built to accommodate a projected annual increase of 56% in the production of UV ink at the site, manufactured in a range of batch sizes of up to 4000 litres. This projection reflects the demand for Fujifilm wide format digital inkjet solutions and the success the company has had in helping its customers transition to digital in this growing market segment. The facility has the capacity to manufacture 6000 tonnes of ink per year, which will be produced in a variety of packs from 250 ml RFID tagged pouches and cartridges up to 10 litre packs for high productivity wide format printer platforms.
Colin Boughton, operations director at the Fujifilm Speciality Ink Systems Broadstairs site comments, "We have planned everything meticulously over the last few years, recognising that to stay at the forefront of digital ink technology with our range of Uvijet inks, we need to work with state-of-the-art equipment and have the ability to increase production and packing volumes. We were delighted to win the "Best Process Plant" award at last year’s "Best Factory Awards" in the UK, evidence of what we have achieved so far. Our vision is to remain at the forefront of this technology and to re-invest every year in order to maintain that position. For instance, we have worked closely with a specialist company to develop next generation dispersion equipment for our inks, and this will allow us to reduce particle sizes to less than 100nm – true nanotechnology!"
He continues, "We are pleased that the transition from one manufacturing area to another was completely seamless, with absolutely no disruption to our production output at all. In fact, some people didn’t even realise we’d started as the transition coincidentally took place during one of our busiest production months for digital ink. Further investments in equipment will take place during 2013, keeping Fujifilm at the cutting edge of UV digital ink manufacturing and packing technology."
Over 340 employees work at the Fujifilm Broadstairs site and over 80% of these are involved in digital ink R&D and manufacture. It was of utmost importance that the workforce should be included as much as possible in the company’s plans, resulting in over 80 employee ideas being used in the final design of the facility. In addition, a high level of importance has been placed on training for all staff, as Fujifilm is keen to ensure that everyone has a full appreciation of digital technology.
Underpinning this extensive project is Fujifilm’s commitment to the environment. As always, the company works tirelessly to ensure that all products and processes are as environmentally friendly as possible, and it has invested significantly in alternative methods of reducing its environmental footprint at the new manufacturing facility.
'Waste' energy in the form of heat from production processes and compressed air generation via a bespoke new heat exchange system is used to provide 70% of the heating required for the factory. In addition, a new boiler plant has been installed which incorporates compact, modern, high efficiency modulating condensing boilers that use 40% less fossil fuels than conventional heating systems. Combine this with the latest figures from the site which show that only 7% of the waste generated goes to landfill, with 23% going to energy recovery and 70% recycled, this means that effectively 93% is reused in some way, and the company’s ‘green’ ethos is easily apparent.
This work has played its part in Fujifilm Speciality Ink Systems being accredited to the Environmental standard ISO14001, in addition to the Quality standard ISO9001. Accreditation to the Health and Safety Standard OHSAS 18001 will be complete by mid 2013.

Cutting edge mindset

In this fast paced environment, changes take place frequently and Fujifilm prides itself on staying at the forefront of any developments, particularly with regard to pigment dispersion equipment and post processing techniques.
This outlook dovetails perfectly with the company’s approach to always provide its own core technologies in both ink and printheads, and partner closely with OEMs such as Inca Digital to develop the best solutions tailored to the market’s needs.

Best Process Plant*

In 2011 Fujifilm Speciality Ink Systems won ‘Best Process Plant Award’ at the ‘Best Factory Awards‘, confirmation that Fujifilm’s digital inkjet wide format customers benefit from the best ink on the market. Key to this success was the control that Fujifilm had on its processes and its workforce buy in.
The judges were also particularly impressed with the Right First Time improvement that stands at over 99% in digital ink manufacture; the 5S housekeeping programme throughout the plant, and Visual Management which gives constant feedback to the manufacturing teams who work in a cellular system.

Fujifilm introduces Digital X-Ray Imaging System 'FCR DYNAMIX SYSTEM' for non-destructive testing

Achieving spatial resolution, density resolution and SN ratio at industry’s highest level, Fujifilm...

FUJIFILM Corporation has launched ‘FCR DYNAMIX SYSTEM’ (hereinafter ‘DYNAMIX SYSTEM’) as the highest resolution and best image quality digital X-ray imaging system for non-destructive testing. This new ‘FUJIFILM COMPUTED RADIOGRAPHY (FCR)’ is capable of detecting and precisely imaging microstructural defects in materials which are used across a wide range of industries and applications such as aerospace, oil/gas and automotive. ‘FUJIFILM can deliver premium image quality with the industry’s highest level*1 of ‘spatial resolution’, ‘density resolution’ and ‘signal-to-noise ratio’　by using double pitch 25μm reading technology and the company’s advanced proprietary image processing technology’.

Fujifilm’s FCR systems for non-destructive testing generate high resolution images by recording image data on the high-sensitivity radiation sensor called an Imaging Plate (IP). The IP is then processed using IP reader which contains a X-ray image scanning device which reads the IP and then creates a digital image showing the structure of the tested material.

The urgent need for higher resolution digital imaging is driven by the rapid expansion of new materials for critical applications, by more exact monitoring of decay and corrosion for existing materials and infrastructure applications. Demand for this new technology is also driven by the transition to digital imaging from film based NDT techniques, resulting in significantly improved cost of ownership for the more traditional NDT applications fields such as aerospace structures/airfoils, petroleum/chemical/power generation facilities, and automotive parts.

Accompanying this high market demand is the shift toward international welding test specification standards which is resulting in the demand for best available technology across global markets requiring ever increased performance standards for material joining applications and higher material safety levels against corrosion wear degradation.

The new DYNAMIX SYSTEM consists of the IP image scanner ‘DYNAMIX HR2’, the DICONDE*3 compliant image display and measurement software ‘DYNAMIX VU’.*4

The DYNAMIX SYSTEM delivers best-in-class image quality using the FUJIFILM’s high-definition 25μm scanning technology, advanced proprietary image processing technology which exceeds the current inspection industry’s highest level of spatial resolution, density resolution and signal-to-noise ratio. The system’s wide dynamic range provide clear images with no highlight and shadow clipping or uneven resolution regardless of material thickness, allowing users to precisely examine the internal structure of and cast materials and parts with a variable wall thickness.

The DYNAMIX SYSTEM uses FUJIFILM’s novel ‘IP Direct Read’ function, in which the IP is placed on a specially engineered tray and inserted into DYNAMIX HR2*5 just prior to image reading. This new reader accepts the IP from both a cassette and as a direct feed*6 after displacement in a protective envelope . The direct feed mechanism is especially beneficial for testing non-standard IP sizes. IPs as long as 152cm can be readily accepted using the direct feed functionality. This function is particularly suited when using imaging plates for pipes and other rounded surface components inspection. The accompanying software features an ‘Automatic Pipe Wall Thickness Measurement’ tool*7 which automatically measures the external and internal wall surfaces of pipes to calculate the degree wall thinning*2. This allows for easy and accurate wall thickness measurement regardless of operator skill level.

Fujifilm continues to be the imaging technology leader through the application of enabling and proprietary technologies. The DYNAMIX CR system is a generation ahead of the competing systems and technologies offering our customers superior imaging performance and lowest cost of ownership.

*1 According to Fujifilm’s measurement figures, the system meets the highest class specifications for spatial resolution (DD13+) and signal-to-noise ratio (130 or above) according to the evaluation standards set by Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und –prüfung (BAM), a public evaluation institute for instrumentation and testing technologies under Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. As for density resolution, it clears the industry’s highest level in accordance with the industrial standard ‘ASTM E-746-07’, set by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM International).
・Spatial resolution: Represents how finely an image is resolved, and indicated by the distance of two identifiable points in space.
・Density resolution: Relates to gradation and represents the ability to reproduce fine shades of grey.
・Signal-to-noise ratio: Indicates the amount of noise against image signals. A larger value represents a better image quality.
*2 Gradual wear and corrosion of pipe’s internal and/or outside walls
*3 Standard specifications for sharing image data among parties involved in non-destructive tests
*4 ‘IP’ and ‘cassette’ are also required for use.
*5 IP must be inserted in a semi-darkroom, as recorded image signals attenuate in visible light.
*6 Commercially available rubber cassette, etc., to be prepared by each customer
*7 Optional

1. Launch date: January 17th 2013
2. Product name: FCR DYNAMIX SYSYTEM
IP image scanning device ‘DYNAMIX HR2’, image display and measurement software ‘DYNAMIX VU’

Fujifilm Announces Lto Ultrium Generation 6 Media Cartridges

First LTO in the world produced with Barium Ferrite magnetic particles

FUJIFILM Recording Media GmbH, a subsidiary of FUJIFILM Corporation, a leading global manufacturer of data storage media, today introduced its new LTO Ultrium 6 data cartridge. The Fujifilm LTO Ultrium 6 cartridge is the first one in the world produced with Barium Ferrite magnetic particles using Fujifilm’s core Nanocubic technology. The LTO Ultrium 6 cartridge offers a super high compressed (2.5x) storage capacity of 6.25TB with the transfer rate of up to 400 megabytes per second.
Since Fujifilm introduced LTO 1 in 2000, we have been leading the industry by continuously working to achieve higher performance and higher quality tapes. In 2010, we made a joint announcement with IBM on a world record of recording density on a linear magnetic tape of 29.5Gbpsi (Gigabit per square inch), which equates to a single cartridge with a recording capacity of 35TB (native). The following year, Fujifilm announced mass production of multi-terabyte enterprise tape cartridges incorporating Barium Ferrite technology, supporting the latest enterprise tape systems from both Oracle (StorageTek T10000C) and IBM (TS1140).
“At Fujifilm, our technological advances are based on Fujifilm’s proprietary core technologies, and these help us meet the rapidly increasing demands that our customers have for long term file storage and data management,” said Shigeki Kobayashi, Managing Director, Fujifilm Recording Media GmbH. In this instance, Fujifilm chose to use Barium Ferrite magnetic particles instead of the current metal particles, because Barium Ferrite is chemically stable, and this enhances performance and increases archival life.

Nano Technology

Fujifilm LTO Ultrium 6 data cartridges use Fujifilm’s advanced NANOCUBIC coating process, which incorporates three Fujifilm proprietary technologies:

Nano-particle Technology: Finer particles (30% smaller than metal particle used on LTO-5)

Nano-dispersion Technology: Uniform particle dispersion by applying high-dispersed binder.

Nano-coating Technology: Improved ultra-thin layer coating to realize an even thinner magnetic layer.

As part of Fujifilm’s overall commitment to develop environmentally sustainable products, Fujifilm’s LTO Ultrium 6 cartridge offers a reduction on its impact on the environment by eliminating brominated flame retardants (BFRs) from all the mechanical parts of Fujifilm LTO6 cartridges. Tape is already viewed by many in the data storage industry to have less of an impact on the environment than other storage options because it consumes less energy.
LTO technology is a powerful, scalable, adaptable open tape format developed and enhanced by the Technology Provider Companies (TPC) – HP, IBM and Quantum – to help address the growing demands of data protection in the midrange to enterprise-class server environments.

LTO Ultrium 6 Features

Excellent read/write property: By adopting Barium Ferrite, Fujifilm LTO Ultrium 6 cartridge has higher coercivity, lower noise compared to older generations. Over time, the recording head of a well-used drives start to wear down leading to a drop in performance. However, since Fujifilm’s LTO Ultrium 6 cartridge with Barium Ferrite, from a system performance point of view, has more margin compared to metal particle tapes (measured using Fuji manufactured tapes), it can be read/written more accurately on these older drives.

Long Archival Life： Barium Ferrite is chemically stable (already oxidized) and does not easily get demagnetized by outside energy. Therefore magnetic tape using Barium Ferrite is said to have a longer archival life of more than 30year based on Fujifilm’s acceleration tests.

Larger Cartridge Memory: Fujifilm LTO Ultrium 6 cartridges offer more space to record specific cartridge information, with the introduction of a 16K Cartridge Memory (IC chip). This feature allows the user to record mount history and easily monitor the cartridge health.

Compatibility: LTO Generation 6 hardware will be backward read/write compatible with LTO Ultrium 5 data cartridges and backward read compatible with LTO Ultrium 4 data cartridges.

As with the previous generation, LTO Ultrium 6 hardware will incorporate the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) and Linear Tape File System (LTFS) dual partitioning functionality.
Fujifilm’s newest line-up will include an LTO Ultrium 6 WORM cartridge for Write-Once Read-Many applications, such as data storage compliance standards which require a non-rewriteable format.

Dual manufacturing facility and Largest LTO Assembly Plant in the World

To meet the growing demands of the LTO industry, over the last year, in addition to the dual manufacturing facility in Japan and in U.S., Fujifilm has restructured its U.S. manufacturing facility in Bedford, Massachusetts to increase the assembly capacity, allowing for greater flexibility and Just-in-time (JIT) Manufacturing. As a result, this facility has become the largest LTO assembly plant in the world.
Fujifilm LTO Ultrium 6 data cartridges will be available through approved Fujifilm partners.

Reinforcing the marketing of the premium "X Series"

FUJIFILM Corporation (President and CEO: Shigetaka Komori) is set to establish "FUJIFILM Nordic AB" in Stockholm, Sweden, in a drive to accelerate expansion of digital camera business in the Scandinavian market. The new subsidiary is to commence its sales operations on July 1, 2012.
With an extensive product lineup ranging from entry models to the premium "X Series," Fujifilm has been reinforcing its operations in areas where there are expectations for business expansion. The establishment of subsidiaries in Ukraine, South Korea and Indonesia last year, and in Vietnam, South Africa and Turkey this year has enabled Fujifilm to facilitate the expansion of the digital camera business.
The three Scandinavian nations of Sweden, Norway and Finland have a high income level, forming a marketplace with a high ratio of sales for premium compact cameras and interchangeable lens cameras. Until now, Fujifilm has sold digital camera products to these countries via its subsidiaries in Germany and U.K. The latest move to establish a local subsidiary in Stockholm, the capital city of Scandinavia's largest market Sweden, will enable Fujifilm to commence direct sales operations at these three countries.
FUJIFILM Nordic AB will facilitate development of digital camera sales strategies by addressing customer needs and implement it dynamically aiming to boost local-oriented marketing with emphasis on the popular interchangeable lens camera "FUJIFILM X-Pro1" and other premium "X Series" models. The company will also build a logistics framework to shorten the delivery lead-time and enhance after-sales services.
The establishment of FUJIFILM Nordic AB will allow Fujifilm to actively promote the growth of digital camera business in the global market, and contribute to the development of respective industries in the region.

Fujifilm announces the opening of its new state-of-the-art plate production line at Tilburg, The Netherlands

Fujifilm today announces the opening of the third production line (PS-10) for the manufacture of...

Fujifilm today announces the opening of the third production line (PS-10) for the manufacture of offset printing plates at its Tilburg plant in The Netherlands. The opening ceremony held today at the site was attended by the Prince of Orange, H.R.H. Prince Willem-Alexander, accompanied by Mr S. Komori, President and CEO of FUJIFILM Corporation, Tokyo.
The theme of the opening ceremony was based entirely around sustainability and innovation. In order to emphasise the sustainable nature of the new PS-10 production line, the ceremony involved H.R.H. Prince Willem-Alexander and Mr Komori making literal ‘green footprints’ in green clay to open the factory.
Fujifilm has invested in the construction of a new plate production line in Tilburg to meet the growing demand for its ‘lo-chem’ and processless printing plates in Europe, Africa and Middle East markets, together with a desire to reduce the carbon footprint of its plate manufacturing and supply operations. As the new PS-10 line is able to manufacture all Fujifilm plates, including the company’s most advanced printing plate to date, the recently launched Brillia HD PRO-T3, this will cut down the carbon footprint associated with transporting such products from further afield.
Alongside other significant sustainable investments, Fujifilm also installed a balanced Co-generative Thermal Oxidiser (CTO) as part of the construction of the PS-10 line. The CTO incinerates waste solvents and is used as an efficient way of generating electricity, steam, cold and hot water. All of the energy generated by the CTO will help power the new PS-10 plate production line, helping to further reduce CO2 emissions by a further 5,500 tonnes per year.
During the opening ceremony, Mr Komori stressed the importance of the Tilburg factory to Fujifilm - the first and largest production facility outside of Japan. Minister Verhagen of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation praised Fujifilm for being a company operating in the top economic sector which is helping to solve social issues. The Queen’s Commissioner for Brabant, Mr Van de Donk and the Mayor of Tilburg, Mr Noordanus also attended the opening.
The new PS-10 plate production line is 330 metres long, with an average width of 35 metres and a maximum height of 22 metres. It was constructed using 850 tonnes of steel and 5500 m3 of concrete.

Starting in early 2012, expanding business in several countries

FUJIFILM Europe GmbH announces today that it will launch the Astalift skincare range into Europe from February 2012. Since its introduction in Japan four years ago the Astalift series has earned high user acclaim in this country among women eager to maintain youthful skin. As part of its effort to expand the healthcare business, Fujifilm has initiated worldwide introduction of skincare products, in which the company applies proprietary technologies. After introduction of these products in China in 2010, the European market introduction is planned to start in 2012.

Fujifilm's Astalift series is a comprehensive anti-aging skincare brand, developed by using cutting edge core technologies accumulated over many years of research and development of photosensitive materials. These distinctive technologies include the findings of its own collagen research, anti-oxidization technology and nano-technology. Containing the skin-replenishing collagen and astaxanthin, an increasingly-popular skin conditioning agent approximately 1,000 times more powerful than the coenzyme Q10*1, the products have received overwhelming support from women who seek to maintain the beauty of natural youthful skin since the launch in 2007 in Japan.

The European cosmetics market has shown considerable growth for a number of years. Within the skincare category, demand for anti-aging, brightening and other functional products continues to increase. Awareness on anti-aging skincare is spreading among younger generations as well as among those who suffer from stress-induced and other skin problems. The introduction of the Astalift product line into Europe is designed to respond to the needs of the European customers with age-related skin issues.

FUJIFILM Europe GmbH, based in Duesseldorf, and responsible for the operations in Europe, will introduce the cosmetics products. A new Business Domain called European Beauty & Health Division has been established for this purpose in order to coordinate all operations in Europe from sales and marketing point of view. Andrzej Brylak has been appointed Director of European Beauty & Health Division and will be responsible for this new business on Pan-European level. In order to prepare for the market introduction and the following business operation, marketing teams in the respective countries have been established. They will work in close cooperation with the European Marketing team based in Duesseldorf. The sales of Astalift skincare products will start in February, 2012 in France, with UK, Germany, and Spain to follow throughout the same year.

“Even though we are entering a market which is new to us, we have good reason to believe in solid growth and enduring success. It is good to know that we have the technological resources at our own command, that we can draw on experience in consumer product marketing, and that we can provide the strength of a global corporation with its worldwide network and shared services” says Junji Okada, Managing Director of FUJIFILM Europe GmbH. “Entering the skincare market is a great chance for us to expand our business in Europe.”

About FUJIFILM Corporation

FUJIFILM Corporation is one of the major operating companies of FUJIFILM Holdings Corporation.
The premium compact digital camera X100 by Fujifilm Corporation has won the iF Product Design Award in the iF Design Awards 2012, i.e. industrial design awards organized by iF International Forum Design GmbH. The iF Product Design Award, established in 1953, is one of the most prestigious industrial design awards in the world.

FUJIFILM X100
X100 features the Hybrid Viewfinder, which has attracted attention since its development announcement in September 2010 for its technologically advanced and topical features. It also incorporates the know-how that Fujifilm has built up over many years through film and film cameras. Fujifilm reverted to the original value of cameras, "passion for photography" and pursued a design that makes users feel pleasure in photographic experiences. This model delivers premium image quality comparable to that of SLRs, and offers operability and design that suit photographers' desire while bringing a sense of joy to everyone who holds it in their hands. Design of X100 that represent what cameras should be have also been received highly, winning prominent awards including TIPA, EISA and Camera GP2011 thus far.

Fujifilm will continue to pursue technological innovation in order to deliver new products and services that address user needs.
