Daniel Porter
AD Communications
E:
Tel: +44 (0)1372 464470

Daniel Porter
AD Communications
E:
Tel: +44 (0)1372 464470

At the same time, the West Midlands company has also become one of the earliest investors in Fujifilm’s revolutionary Platesense programme, further enhancing both the offset and digital strands of its partnership with Fujifilm.

We’ve been delighted with the performance of the Jet Press 720S since our investment three years ago,” says the company’s director, Jamie Emmerson. “It’s boosted our reputation without doubt and it’s given us the ability to take on some high quality and high profile short run work that we simply wouldn’t have been able to consider otherwise – including a bespoke, large format book for Bernie Ecclestone based on his private collection of F1 cars. Since the investment, we’ve seen our digital turnover double, through a combination of acquiring new business and moving shorter run work from our litho presses.

During the August switch-over – when our 720S press was removed and the 750S installed – we found ourselves without a Jet Press for a few weeks for the first time in several years and had to migrate jobs onto other digital platforms or to our litho presses. We had a few of our regular customers get in touch to ask if we’d done anything differently as they didn’t think the quality was quite up to the standard they had become used to. That really drove home to us just how valuable the extra quality offered by the Jet Press has been to us.

With the Jet Press 750S now up and running, we can offer that same level of quality, but with more speed and using less power. It’s a win-win from our point of view – we can simultaneously increase the rate of our digital business growth and reduce our environmental footprint.

At the same time as making this important investment to secure the future of its digital business,
has also made an equally important investment in its offset printing process, signing up to Fujifilm’s revolutionary Platesense programme.

We’ve been a Fujifilm plates customer for seven years now,” continues Emmerson. “And we’ve been very happy with the quality of the plates and the service we’ve received from Fujifilm over that time. We decided that we needed to replace our two existing platesetters and Fujifilm’s Platesense programme, once we looked into it, seemed the obvious way to do this. We can now lease CTP equipment rather than having to buy up-front and Fujifilm takes care of the collection of scrap aluminium, significantly reducing our administration time and costs.

The Fujifilm Superia plates we’re using under the Platesense agreement are harder wearing than those we were using previously and, as they are processless, it also means that we’re now reducing our water consumption substantially. Our old processor used 12 pints of water per plate. Now we’re making plates using no water at all. That means a small cost saving in our water bill – but that’s not why we’re doing it. Just as the Jet Press 750S upgrade has given us the opportunity to substantially reduce our environmental impact through lower energy use, the move to processless plates is helping us to do the same through reducing our water consumption dramatically.

Says Andy Kent, Divisional Manager Fujifilm Graphic Systems UK:

Fujifilm is proud to be a company with a proven track record of innovation in both offset and digital print. While we’re right at the cutting edge of digital print technology, we’re also constantly innovating on the offset side of the business – not just in terms of technology – but in helping our customers to completely rethink the way that they do business, boosting efficiencies, reducing waste and growing profits in a challenging market. We’re proud to have been both a digital and offset solutions partner to Emmerson Press for some years now and we’re delighted that they have chosen to reinvest with Fujifilm to move both sides of their business forward into the future.

Fujifilm set to unveil a strategy to maximise efficiencies and minimise costs by launching its established Platesense programme and processless plate technologies to the newspaper market, alongside its leading violet systems and Elara workflow

Fujifilm’s comprehensive Platesense solution and thermal processless plates are already improving productivity and providing enormous time and cost savings to commercial printers all over Europe. At <link https://www.ifra-expo.com/ _blank external-link-new-window>IFRA World Publishing Expo 2019
(Stand E.03, Hall 21a 8 – 9 October, Berlin) Fujifilm invites newspaper printers to come and learn how these innovations can boost productivity, reduce costs and waste, and provide some welcome certainty in uncertain times.

For a set monthly fee, printers can lease CTP equipment directly from Fujifilm, eliminating the capital expenditure required to upgrade or invest in new platesetting equipment. Furthermore, as part of the same agreed monthly fee, Fujifilm can take responsibility for all parts of plate production, supplying the plates and consumables as they are needed and taking care of waste and aluminium collection.

Extra services can also be rolled in on top of this, including management of pre-press personnel and an upgrade to Fujifilm’s dedicated Elara newspaper workflow solution.

With newspaper printers under continued pressure to cut costs and improve efficiencies, Fujifilm is also looking at ways it can bring its leading thermal processless plate technologies to the newspaper market. As such, Fujifilm is set to use the IFRA World Publishing Expo to unveil a strategy for the future based around bringing all the benefits of its processless plate technologies to newspaper printers, alongside its existing violet systems and Elara workflow solution. Combined with Platesense, these solutions provide a unique platform for newspaper printers to maximise efficiencies and minimise costs.

Thomas Kurz, Head of Newspapers, Fujifilm Graphic Systems EMEA says:

Fujifilm is proud to have held such a longstanding reputation for helping newspaper printers boost profitability through the unrivalled performance and durability of our environmentally friendly Superia plate range. We’re delighted to now be bringing our ground-breaking Platesense solution and the benefits of thermal processless technology to the newspaper printing industry. This will not only benefit newspaper printers with improved performance and resource savings, it will also simplify their entire plate production process and reduce operational costs.

Fujifilm recognises the huge challenges faced by newspaper printers in the current market. In Platesense, and our leading processless plate technologies, we can offer new opportunities to radically boost operating efficiencies and maximise profitability by meeting these challenges head on.

- Equipped with AF capable of tracking a fast-moving subject and detecting face / eye at high speed and accuracy to capture every precious moment,
- Producing high quality 4K video and sporting a large bright rear LCD monitor for excellent operability

FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Kenji Sukeno) announced that it will launch the “FUJIFILM X-A7” (“X-A7”) in Autumn 2019, a new addition to the X Series of compact and lightweight mirrorless digital camera that deliver outstanding image quality with the company's unique color reproduction technology.

Weighing just 320g*, stylish X-A7 carries a newly-developed 24.24MP APS-C sensor to deliver premium image quality with the company's proprietary color reproduction technology. The sensor uses copper wiring to enable high-speed data readout, and features phase detection pixels across the entire sensor surface to enhance AF speed and accuracy. This enables AF tracking of a moving subject as well as Face / Eye detection AF with ease. The camera also records smooth 4K/30fps video and high-speed video, catering to the ever-growing need for high-quality video for use in Vlog** and other media.

The camera has a large 3.5-inch LCD monitor with the maximum luminous intensity of approx. 1,000 candelas to guarantee intuitive operability on the rear panel. Furthermore, this is the first X Series model that features a “vari-angle” monitor that users can adjust to any angles. It can be used in conjunction with the Portrait Enhancer Mode for self-portraits of advanced quality. The X-A7 is a perfect choice for those who want to upgrade their photography from smartphone pictures, offering a broad range of applications from casual snapshots of everyday scenes to travel photography and full-fledged photographic creations.

*Including the weight of memory card and supplied battery
**A coined phrase combining “video” and “blog,” referring to a blog in the video format

1. Model name, color variations

Model name: FUJIFILM X-A7

Color variations: Silver / Camel / Mint Green / Dark Silver

2. Main features

(1) Newly-developed image sensor delivering premium image quality and outstanding AF performance

The X-A7 features a newly-developed 24.24MP APS-C sensor. Combined with Fujifilm's unique color reproduction technology, accumulated over 80 years, the sensor produces vibrant colors in what Fujifilm calls “memory colors,” exactly as the users remember them to achieve photography of premium image quality.

The quality of images taken at high ISO sensitivity has been improved over that of the current model*4. The sensor delivers clear images with low noise even at the ultra-high sensitivity of ISO51200, which is particularly useful when shooting a fast-moving subject or in low light conditions.

The sensor uses copper wiring to enable high-speed data readout, and features about 8.5 times more phase detection pixels than the current model*** across the entire sensor surface to enhance AF speed and accuracy. This not only enhances AF tracking of a moving subject and Face / Eye detecting AF performance, but also allows users to attain fast and accurate autofocus even in low light.

Increased data readout speed also significantly reduces the rolling shutter distortion*4, often observed when shooting a fast-moving subject.

***Referring to the FUJIFILM X-A5 mirrorless digital camera
*4A distortion to a subject when shooting with electronic shutter

- Second zoom cinema lens in the Premista Series with outstanding high resolution, beautiful bokeh and rich gradation
- Bringing out the potential of large format sensors in video production to the maximum extent
- Covering focal lengths from 28mm to 250mm when combined with a standard zoom lens

FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Kenji Sukeno) is pleased to announce that it will release the telephoto zoom lens FUJINON Premista80-250mmT2.9-3.5 (“Premista80-250mm”) with a focal length of 80-250mm in December 2019. It will be the second model to join the Premista Series of zoom cinema lenses that support large-format sensors* and deliver outstanding high resolution, natural and beautiful bokeh and rich gradation with HDR (high dynamic range). The Premista80-250mm complements the FUJINON Premista28-100mmT2.9 (“Premista28-100mm”), released in August this year, to cover a broad range of focal lengths from 28mm to 250mm, further expanding focal lengths coverage that can be captured with premium image quality.

* Large image sensors that measure 43.2-46.3mm diagonally

For producing high quality videos such as Hollywood movies, there has been increasing demand for filming equipment capable of delivering beautiful bokeh and rich gradation with HDR. Accordingly, many cinematographers have been adopting cinema cameras equipped with a large format sensor. While a variety of prime lenses compatible with the large format sensors are already available in the market, there is a growing demand for zoom lenses, which cover a wide range of focal lengths without having to change lenses frequently, and therefore offer more efficient operability.

In response to such demand, Fujifilm has developed the Premista Series of zoom lenses for high-performance cinema cameras equipped with a large format sensor. The Premista28-100mm, the first model in this Series released in August this year, has been praised by professionals of video production for “edge-to-edge sharpness” and “coverage of the most frequently-used focal lengths for exceptional convenience.”

The Premista80-250mm is a telephoto zoom lens covering focal lengths from 80mm to 250mm. Featuring large-diameter aspherical lens elements and unique focusing / zooming system, the lens achieves an astonishing level of edge-to-edge sharpness. The use of 13-blade iris design, combined with shallow depth-of-field which is a characteristic of large format sensors, produces natural and beautiful bokeh to faithfully capture the subject's texture, three-dimensional definition and even an atmosphere of the scene. Furthermore, the lens applies Fujifilm's unique optical design to minimize ghosts and flares, thereby creating rich gradation with HDR and bringing out the full potential of large-format sensors.

The Premista80-250mm can be paired with the Premista28-100mm to cover focal lengths from 28mm to 250mm, capturing scenes with broad background in wide angle as well as closing in on a subject from a distance in telephoto. The two lenses also share the same front diameter and the gear position for three rings. This ensures efficient operability, as users can fit the same matte box, follow-focus system and other accessories, without re-adjusting accessory positions when changing between the two lenses.

Fujifilm has led the cinema industry since its foundation in 1934 to achieve domestic production of photographic and motion picture films in Japan. The company's products are widely praised by videographers around the world, with the development of high-performance zoom cinema lenses winning the Emmy Award by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2017. Fujifilm will continue to tap into optical, high precision forming and assembling technologies that have been nurtured in the field of cutting-edge video production to develop a wide range of lenses, thereby addressing the diversifying needs.

Fujifilm launches “FUJIFILM LTO Ultrium8 Data Cartridge”

-Deliver the maximum 30TB of storage capacity, twice the capacity of the previous generation,
-Cost effective, secure and long term data storage,
-Fast data transfer rate of 750MB/sec.

FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Kenji Sukeno) announced that it has launched FUJIFILM LTO Ultrium8 Data Cartridge (LTO8) on September 2, 2019. Adhering to the 8th-generation LTO Ultrium* standards for magnetic tape storage media, the LTO8 will allow for backup and archive of large-capacity data, using the barium ferrite (BaFe) magnetic particles with its outstanding recording/retrieval performance and long-term durability. It offers a storage capacity of 30TB (12TB for non-compressed data), twice the capacity of the previous generation**. It is also capable of transferring data at 750MB/sec. (360MB/sec. for non-compressed). With its ability to provide secure and long term storage of massive data at a low cost, LTO8 responds to the increasing demand for data storage.

The amount of data generated worldwide has exponentially increased in recent years with the expansion of high-definition 4K and 8K video, development of IoT and ICT and the utilization of AI for Big Data analysis. This includes “cold-data,” or data that was generated a long time ago and rarely accessed, and is estimated to account for more than 80% of all data. As the utilization of accumulated data, including cold data, rapidly increases, so does the need for reliable and cost effective long term storage of such data for future use. Magnetic tapes have been used among major data centers and research organizations for many years as magnetic tapes not only offer large storage capacity, low cost and long-term storage performance, but also create “air gap” data protection, physically isolated from the network, which minimize the risk of data damage or loss caused by cyber attacks. In the future, magnetic tapes are expected to be used in cutting edge research fields where generate a large amount of data, such as AI / IoT-based smart manufacturing to achieve high-quality and highly efficient production, and future connected cars.

Fujifilm has developed the fine BaFe magnetic particles with outstanding magnetic properties and long-term storage performance and launched the world's first commercial BaFe data storage cartridge in 2011. In 2012, the company launched LTO6, the first LTO Ultrium Standard data cartridge product using BaFe magnetic particles. Foreseeing the capacity limitations in the traditional metal magnetic particles, Fujifilm's early commercialization of BaFe magnetic tapes has allowed the company to consistently lead the market.

With LTO8, Fujifilm has further developed its unique “NANOCUBIC technology***” to produce even smaller BaFe magnetic particles than those used in the LTO7. The magnetic particles are separated by highly controlled dispersion process and the tape surface roughness is controlled, achieving smooth surface of magnetic layer with enhanced NANO coating technology. In this way, Fujifilm has increased the storage capacity up to 30TB (12TB for non-compressed data), twice the capacity of LTO7, high speed data transfer reaching750MB/sec. (360MB/sec. for non-compressed data). Furthermore, appropriate material design has allowed for high tracking performance and durability for the magnetic heads in the tape drives, boost reliability showing stable and excellent performance.

Since the launch of LTO1 in 2000, Fujifilm has consistently developing high-performance and high-quality magnetic tapes with large data capacity. As the world's top*4 manufacturer of magnetic tapes for data storage, Fujifilm will continue to develop and supply high-performance and high-quality media and services that satisfy customer needs and expectations, thereby helping to solve social issues.

*Linear Tape-Open, LTO, the LTO logo, Ultrium and the Ultrium logo are registered trademarks of Hewlett Packard Enterprise, IBM and Quantum in the United States of America and in other countries.
**FUJIFILM LTO Ultrium7 Data Cartridge that complies with the 7th-generation LTO Ultrium standards
***Fujifilm's nanotechnology-based magnetic tape technology with thin coating to achieve high-density magnetic data recording. It consists of the “nano-particle technology” for formulating magnetic particles into nano-sized particles, “nano-dispersion technology” for evenly dispersing and arranging nano-sized magnetic particles, and “nano-coating technology” for achieving the coating of the ultra-thin layer.
*4 Manufacturer share, according to Fujifilm data
