We launched our first X-ray film product in 1936 and introduced the world's first digital X-ray imaging and diagnostic system in 1983. Driving the trend toward digital imaging, Fuji Computed Radiography (FCR) products are among the leading systems in the global market.
Physicians use X-rays, ultrasound and other medical images to help decide on treatments. Fujifilm's Synapse system lets doctors quickly access these images and share them via digital networks. Widely used in emergency rooms, Synapse is installed at more than 1,000 hospitals and clinics around the world and has a guaranteed 99.99% uptime. This picture archiving and communication system (PACS) also supports community-based healthcare via dedicated medical network services.
Endoscopes let doctors look inside the body. But conventional endoscopes, inserted through the mouth, cause gagging. That's why we developed a tiny transnasal endoscope that goes in through the nose. Fujifilm also offers double-balloon enteroscopy and capsule endoscopy systems for intestinal examinations, and equipment and imaging software for surgical procedures.
Fujifilm's compact, portable ultrasound systems are ideal for bedside and emergency situations. Ultrasonography is gentle to the patient and allows real-time imaging. It is commonly used during pregnancy and for breast, heart, and pelvic examinations. The acquisition of SonoSite, Inc., a world leader in bedside and point-of-care ultrasound diagnostic products, accelerates Fujifilm's entry into the fast-growing hand-carried ultrasound equipment market and positions ultrasonography as a strategic pillar for growth of Fujifilm's medical systems business.
Radiopharmaceuticals help diagnose stroke victims and detect early signs of disease in the brain and other organs. Fujifilm is expanding into this area through group company Fujifilm RI Pharma, following acquisition of the nuclear medicine pioneer Daiichi Radioisotope Laboratories in 2006.
In the pharmaceutical field, Fujifilm is focusing on the three areas of low-molecular drugs, biopharmaceuticals and regenerative medical products. To generate and identify new drug candidates, we established FUJIFILM Pharmaceutical & Healthcare Research Laboratories as our fundamental R&D platform. We are also investing strategically in technology firms that offer unique synergies with Fujifilm's multi-disciplinary expertise for new pharmaceutical development.
At Fujifilm we like to see smiling faces - not only in photographs but also in real life. A primary raw material of photographic film is made of collagen, which is also the main protein in human skin. Photographs fade because of oxidation, a process that also causes skin aging. Now we have developed a line of unique skincare products that combine our expertise in collagen processing, oxidation prevention and ultrafine emulsion technology. These advanced products are spearheading our entry into preventive healthcare.
