Iconic London retailer Fortnum and Mason enhances luxury hot chocolate promotion with bespoke short run of tins printed on Fujifilm’s Acuity B1 inkjet press

Fortnum and Mason’s canmaker of choice, William Say & Co, turned to Fujifilm, and the Acuity B1 to produce a high quality short run of tins for an in-store display.

Fortnum and Mason, one of London’s most instantly recognisable retail brands and owner of the capital’s most iconic food hall, boasts a long, proud heritage of over 300 years. For the purpose of a recent promotion in its flagship Piccadilly store, the company needed a bespoke short run of ultra-high quality printed metal tins in which to present its range of luxury hot chocolate. William Say & Co – London’s last remaining independent canmaker, founded in 1920 – was tasked with the project.

In keeping with the Fortnum and Mason brand, matching the colour precisely and achieving an extremely high quality finish was vital, but the challenge William Say & Co faced was finding a way to do this over a very short run. The company spoke with a range of specialist metal decoration service providers, but as all used traditional offset printing processes, the high set up costs involved meant that none were able to offer the ultra-short run of printed metal sheets William Say & Co required to create the tins.

Here the long-standing connection between William Say & Co and Fujifilm proved invaluable. For more than forty years P Wilkinson Containers, William Say’s sister company, has provided cans and plastics tubs to Fujifilm for its inks. Using a demo Acuity B1 inkjet printer at Fujifilm’s Broadstairs facility, the team digitally printed the high-quality, short run of metal sheets required.

William Say & Co manufactured the tins using solar power at its Bermondsey factory, just a stone’s throw away from the product’s final retail destination. At Fortnum and Mason, the large promotional tins, with their colourful printed designs, created an impactful Christmas display.

Stuart Wilkinson, Marketing and Sales Director at William Say & Co, commented:

“We’ve had a long running relationship with Fortnum and Mason spanning two decades, supplying them with tins for their luxury hot chocolate, amongst other products.

“With this project, we’ve combined both heritage and innovation as these large promotional tins, which stand at 50cm tall, are the first in the UK to utilise Fujifilm’s breakthrough digital printing technology. And to be able to create these within such a short timeframe opens up a whole host of new creative possibilities for canmakers.”

Kevin Jenner, Business Manager, Commercial, Fujifilm Speciality Ink Systems added:

“William Say & Co and Fortnum and Mason are both iconic London brands, rich in heritage. We’re delighted to be able to unite them with the aid of Fujifilm’s digital inkjet technology. Thanks to Fujifilm’s extensive R&D and nearly two decades of pioneering inkjet technology in the graphic arts industry, Fujifilm is in an unrivalled position to offer canmakers and metal decoration printers the means to stay ahead of market trends towards bespoke short runs of high end work.

“The Acuity B1 provides the enabling technology for metal decoration printers to add tremendous value to their clients’ businesses as well as enhancing their own credibility and reputation. Moreover, this partnership demonstrates the commercial benefits and value that digital print can offer the canmaking industry and how companies within the sector can stay competitive.”

FUJIFILM X-T4. Capturing the decisive moment to help tell that story. The ultimate mirrorless camera that satisfies the creative desire of all professionals.

FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Kenji Sukeno) is proud to announce the launch of the
FUJIFILM X-T4
(hereinafter “X-T4”), a flagship model of the X Series range of mirrorless digital cameras.

The X-T4 is the pinnacle of the X Series, delivering the highest performance in both stills and video. A new shutter unit has been developed to be fast, durable and quiet. Combined with the fastest ever autofocus performance in an X Series camera, thanks to the development of a new algorithm, you can now capture the decisive moment that you may have missed before. The X-T4 is also the first model in the X-T Series to feature in-body image stabilization (IBIS), dramatically boosting the potential of the camera for stills and video shooting. The standalone video mode, which is now activated with a simple switch, and the use of digital image stabilization in the video mode, provides unparalleled shooting smoothness, allowing users to immerse themselves in video production. The new Film Simulation mode, ETERNA Bleach Bypass, simulates the traditional film processing technique to create a unique world of low saturation and high contrast.

The X-T4 is an amazing imaging tool, packing with IBIS, new shutter unit and a large-capacity battery all housed into a compact and lightweight body, which is the core philosophy of all X Series . There are photographic moments that only the X-T4, the ultimate mirrorless camera, can help you capture and record.

Key features and improvements of X-T4 include:

Powerful new components

The X-T4 is the first model in the X-T Series to feature an IBIS mechanism. It provides 5-axis 6.5 stop image stabilization when used with 18 out of 29 XF / XC lenses, thanks to the use of new materials for the base part, refined layout of the shutter’s shock-absorbing structure and newly developed gyro sensors that boast approx. 8 times the detection accuracy of the IBIS unit in the X-H1. The mechanism assists night photography or action photography such as sports, and also helps video recording in situations prone to camera shake. The new IBIS unit uses magnetic force rather than springs, which boosts functionality while making it approx. 30% smaller and 20% lighter than X-H1’s image stabilization mechanism.

The X-T4 is equipped with an ultra-fast focal plane shutter. Thanks to newly developed high-torque coreless DC motor, the shutter has the capability to shoot up to world’s fastest*1 15fps in burst mode, and has advanced response performance with a shutter release lag of just 0.035 seconds. The shutter unit also boasts double the durability with 300,000 actuations and shutter noise approx. 30% quieter compared to the X-T3.

The NP-W235 battery has a large capacity that is approx. 1.5 times that of an NP-W126S battery. It lasts for approx. 500 frames per charge in the Normal mode, approx. 600 frames per charge in the Economy mode and up to approx. 1,700 frames when two additional batteries are used with the optional battery grip "VG-XT4"*2.

The X-T4 uses the back-illuminated 26.1MP “X-TransTM CMOS 4”*3 sensor and a high-speed image processing engine “X-Processor 4.” Combined with FUJIFILM’s color reproduction technology, nurtured over 85 years of R&D for photographic films, the X-T4 delivers a wide variety of options so you can recreate a scene exactly as you remember it.

Unique color reproduction technology

The X-T4 features “ETERNA Bleach Bypass,” a new Film Simulation mode, that uses FUJIFILM’s unique technology to provide versatile color tones. The new mode simulates “bleach bypass,” a traditional processing technique for silver halide films, creating images with low saturation and high contrast for a special atmosphere.

Highlight and shadow tones from -2 to +4 can now be adjusted by 1/2 stops, instead of 1 stop, allowing for finer tonality.

White Balance now has “White Priority” and “Ambience Priority” options in addition to “AUTO.” The “White Priority” mode reproduces white better, while the “Ambience Priority” produces a warmer tone.

When “RAW” is selected, you can now choose the non-reversible “Compressed” option in addition to the reversible “Lossless Compressed.”

Capture everything

The X-T4 offers a world’s fastest*1 15fps continuous shooting in post view and an 8fps continuous shooting in live view using the mechanical shutter and the electronic shutter enables blackout-free burst shooting of 30fps.

The eyecup now has a locking mechanism to prevent tearing or dislodgement.

The 1.62 mil dots vari-angle monitor allows for more creative and versatile shooting styles.

The LCD/EVF can be boosted in three different ways, Low Light Priority - allowing you to see the subject clearly in low light, Resolution Priority - displaying even the fine details of your subject and Frame Rate Priority – minimizing blur in the viewfinder when shooting a moving subject.

The Boost / Normal modes are now joined by the Economy mode, which saves the power to increase the battery life.

High Performance

A new algorithm and phase detection AF’s processing capability has led to autofocus performance as fast as 0.02 seconds. This ensures that you capture and track a subject moving at high speed, especially when combined with the continuous shooting performance of 15fps in post view and 8fps in live view.

Tracking AF performance has also undergone serious enhancement. The tracking success rate has been doubled compared to the X-T3.

The Face / Eye AF performance has been dramatically improved. This enhanced tracking ability has made focusing and taking portraits even easier than ever before.

Professional video functions

The X-T4 is capable of recording Full HD high-speed video at 240P, producing up to 10x slow-motion effect.

The IBIS is when combined with the electronic image stabilization function (DIS) for use in the video mode, brings even more image stabilization, essential when shooting video while you walk.

The "IS (Image Stabilization) Boost" mode mitigates gentle camera shakes, enabling stabilized fixed-point video recording without a tripod.

The stills and video modes now have separate menus and the video-only Quick Menu (Q Menu) button has enhanced the camera's simplicity while recording video.

”Movie optimized control” function has been introduced. Users can adjust exposure with the command dial as well as the touchscreen panel. With this function, you can switch the STILL / MOVIE mode dial on the top panel to swiftly shift into video recording with stored video settings.

Video in the same format can be recorded on to two SD cards at the same time as backup.

The F-Log View Assist function has been added to correct low-saturation / low-contrast video while recording F-Log. Video is converted equivalent to BT.709 for display to make it easier to attain correct exposure in video recording.

The “Fix movie crop magnification” function fixes the video crop rate to prevent changes in the angle of view when switching to a different video mode.

"MIC jack setting" on the camera can be switched input level between MIC level and LINE level. The camera supports external microphones as well as LINE level input from external audio equipment.

Optional accessories

(1) Vertical battery grip “VG-XT4” (for the X-T4 only)
The vertical battery grip is dust- and moisture-resistant and operates at temperatures as low as minus 10 degrees Celsius. It fits two batteries and, when combined with a third battery in the camera body, delivers up to approx. 1,450 frames in the Normal mode and 1,700 frames in the Economy mode. When one battery runs out, the camera switches seamlessly to the next battery while continuing to shoot, even in the burst mode or during video recording.
The grip features a shutter release button, focus lever, AEL button, AFON button, command dials, Q button and Fn button to provide the same level of handling and comfort in vertical shooting as you get in horizontal operation.

(2) Battery “NP-W235”
This large capacity battery is 1.5 times that of an NP-W126S battery, lasts for 500 frames per charge in the Normal mode, 600 frames in the Economy mode and up to 1,700 frames continuously if it is combined with the optional battery grip "VG-XT4" which holds 2 more batteries.

(3) Dual battery charger “BC-W235”
This charger can charge two NP-W235 batteries at the same time.

(4) Cover kit “CVR-XT4”
This is a cover kit specifically designed for the X-T4.

The kit contains
1 x Sync terminal cover
1 x Hot shoe cover
1 x Vertical battery grip terminal cover (black)
1 x Vertical battery grip terminal cover (silver)
1 x Memory card slot cover

(5) Shoe-mount flash “EF-X8”
This flash small hot shoe flash is now available as an optional accessory.

FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Kenji Sukeno) is pleased to announce the launch of “
instax mini 11
” (mini 11) on or after March 5, 2020, a stylish renewal of the globally most popular mini format entry model*. It will be a new addition to the “instax” series of instant cameras, allowing users to enjoy on-the-spot photo printing.

To be released this time are stylish mini-format instax film “BLUE MARBLE” and square-format instax film “WHITE MARBLE,” both featuring marble patterns on the frames. The marble-design frames are accentuated with glittery gold and silver, turning a daily snap into a memorable special piece.

The “instax” series of instant cameras, launched in 1998, now offers a wide variety of models that cater to diverse user needs in over 100 countries worldwide, including Japan, Europe, Americas, China and Southeast Asia. The series has gained popularity especially among young people, who love being able to print and share a precious moment on the spot, and feel a sepcial sense of connection with friends when sharing photo prints with them. It is embraced by a large number of people as a tool for creating real communication. “Instax” has been affectionately called “Cheki” in Japan for over 20 years since its initial launch.

The new mini 11 is the first entry model to feature the “Automatic Exposure” function, in which the camera automatically senses the level of ambient light when the shutter button is pressed, and optimizes the shutter speed and flash output according to the condition. It allows users to take photos optimally exposed to the main subject and the background in a variety of situations including a bright sunny day outdoors and a dark indoor condition at a restaurant or a party venue, producing high-quality instant photo prints on the spot.

Another feature that makes taking instax photos easier than ever before is the Selfie Mode, which is ideal for selfies and close-ups. The Selfie Mode can be activated by simply pulling out the front end edge of the lens after powering the camera on.

The camera body has been redesigned for optimal portability along with a fresh, trendy look. In addition of it being thinner and lighter than the previous model, the mini 11 sports a rounded body design that fits perfectly in users' hands for added operability. Fashionable design elements on the mini 11 are achieved by using a different material around the lens from the rest of the camera body, and featuring the brand logo “instax” engraved on the back side.

The mini 11 is available in five pale tone colors (Blush Pink, Sky Blue, Charcoal Gray, Ice White and Lilac Purple). The camera also comes with two replaceable accessories for the shutter button to change the button's looks according to users' preference.

<About the promotion campaign>

Since the fall of 2019, Fujifilm has been running a global promotional campaign for the instax brand, communicating the unique value of instax prints under the tagline of “Don't Just Take, Give.”

The mini 11 will also be promoted globally under the same concept online, on social media and in stores as an all-new instax that is more beautiful, easier and more in tune with each user's preference than ever before.

Fujifilm will continue to expand the world of the “instax” instant photo system, which allows people across the globe to “enjoy printing photos as they take them.”

Major UK book printer reflects on the versatility and make-ready benefits of Fujifilm’s Jet Press 750S

Printer of 160 million books a year, Suffolk-based Clays has seen Fujifilm’s Jet Press 750S take on a hugely significant role for its short-run book cover production since installation in mid-2019

Ian Smith, Operations Director at Clays.

Established over 200 years ago, Clays is recognised as a market leading book production specialist. Its 14 acre Bungay site employs 700 staff and processes an extraordinary 50,000 orders a year for 160 million books from some of the best known publishers in the UK. In July 2019, the company became the second in the UK to invest in Fujifilm’s Jet Press 750S to further enhance its digital printing operations.

“Working with such high-profile authors and publishers means we must have equipment that satisfies their requirements,” says Paul Hulley, Managing Director at Clays. “The book industry has seen a marked changed from where it was 10-15 years ago; rather than being printed in bulk, books can be printed on demand and in response to retail sale requests. It is vital therefore, that we have technology to produce outstanding quality quickly and efficiently. Uptime is constant at our facilities, so we must also ensure that we have products that allow for seamless job changeovers and generate as little a waste as possible.”

“We use a wide range of litho and digital presses, and each offer significant advantages in their own way,” adds Ian Smith, Clays’ Operations Director. “We are always looking for ways in which we can streamline our processes and also improve the quality of our work. Fujifilm’s Jet Press 750S has certainly offered that and more.

“It can print on a wide range of substrates without us needing to use any particular coating, and from a business point of view, it brings short-run, self-colours and a wide range of pantone colours. In fact, the machine stores any colour we create for one job, so we can use it again and again and be in no doubt it will produce the same quality every time.”

Hulley is clear on the gaps the Jet Press has filled within the business:

“There were times in the past when we had to use litho presses for more complex work that our existing digital presses struggled to complete to the necessary quality. That gap in our capabilities has now been filled with the Jet Press – it’s extremely capable – not only in doing some things that we were unable to do digitally until now, but it’s also fulfilling other roles as well. As a solution, it adds to an already impressive arsenal of equipment and the abilities we have as a business.”

As the company continues to evolve to meet the needs of an ever-changing market, Smith explains how Fujifilm’s Jet Press is helping them on that journey:

“The Jet Press gives us the ability to produce a wider range of short run work, more cost effectively than before. We understand our customers’ desire to have varied, colourful and impactful covers – so being able to produce such a wide variety of products with no make-ready, and at ever-lower run lengths, provides us with a platform to greater satisfy the needs of our customers now and in the future.”

The Jet Press is also helping Clays to meet the high environmental standards it sets itself. Smith explains:

“Sustainability is something people are becoming more and more aware of across the printing industry, so the fact we now have a zero make ready press, using far less paper and reducing our overall wastage, helps us meet those obligations.

“Ultimately, we see the Jet Press as having simplified our workplace – there is little wastage and the transition of work off our other presses and onto the Jet Press has been completely seamless. We expect the highest quality from our equipment, as do our customers, and we’ve had nothing but positive feedback on the work we’ve done on the Jet Press.”

Smith also has high praise for Fujifilm’s support team:

“Relationships are incredibly important – you must get along with whoever you are working with and the team at Fujifilm have been great since day one. For the machine to hit the floor here and achieve what it has in such a short space of time has truly demonstrated how well we were able to work with them, and gives us a great platform to work from in the future.”

Andy Kent, Divisional Manager at Fujifilm Graphic Systems UK says:

“Clays has responded to changes in the book printing market and acted to make sure it can now deliver on short run requests more efficiently than ever. As one of the biggest and historically significant book printers in the UK, producing millions of books every year, we’re delighted that they’ve been able to enhance their offering still further with the Jet Press 750S.”

FUJIFILM Europe GmbH will launch a new function known as “CAD EYE,” which was developed by FUJIFILM Corporation to support real time detection of colonic polyps during colonoscopy utilizing AI technology*1. CAD EYE's functionality will be available with software EW10-EC01 and the compatible expansion unit EX-1 in combination with the Fujifilm ELUXEO 7000 system.
Fujifilm has already acquired CE mark for this new software EW10-EC01 and it will be launched with EX-1 in March 2020.

Improving the detection rate of difficult to discover lesions has been one of the major challenges within the field of endoscopy in recent years. Fujifilm has continuously worked on the development of image processing technologies such as Linked Color Imaging (LCI) and Blue Light Imaging (BLI) utilizing specific wavelengths of light to support early cancer detection and characterization.

“I am very pleased to announce the launch of the CAD EYE Detection function. I am convinced that with this new development, we will achieve our vision of reducing the incidence of colorectal cancers and patient mortality whilst lowering the economic burden associated with the management and aftercare that results from this devastating disease,” says Mr. Takakazu Sakashita, Senior Vice President FUJIFILM Europe GmbH Medical Systems Division.

“CAD EYE utilizes Fujifilm’s medical Artificial Intelligence technology REiLI. Fujifilm has a highly capable image processing R&D organisation and through this powerful technological heritage, we have been able to quickly develop new solutions that meet the real needs of our global customers.“

„CAD EYE has been trained with a powerful super-computer located in Fujifilm’s global AI technology centre in Tokyo, utilising an immense amount of clinical images using Fujifilm endoscopy systems.“ says Takemasa Kojima, Vice President FUJIFILM Europe GmbH Head of Sales and Marketing Endoscopy System. „This ensures that CAD EYE is a customised detection support compatible with the ELUXEO system. It is user-friendly, simple and intuitive: an excellent and effective support tool during long hours in the examination room aimed to improve lesion detection in the colon at expert level.“

CAD EYE Detection is automatically activated when observing with White Light or LCI mode to support real-time lesion detection*2. A user-friendly interface has been pursued for ease of use and simplicity, which does not interfere with the endoscopic image, and minimises operators’ eye movement.

When a suspicious polyp is detected within the endoscopic image, a Detection Box indicates the area where the suspicious polyp has been detected, and a Visual Assist Circle illuminates in the vicinity. Additionally a sound is heard when a suspicious polyp is detected.

Background

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer after lung cancer and breast cancer in terms of the number of cases, and the second most common cause of cancer death after lung cancer*3. And in order to reduce the incidence of cancer, colonoscopy is widely considered the gold standard for detection of colonic neoplasia. However, errors in colonoscopic detection of neoplasia, including both polyps and cancers, are well documented and improvement of detection rate of such legions has been one of the major topics in gastroenterology field. 4*, 5*

Fujifilm is working to develop a unique collection of image processing technologies and continues to develop the practical application of AI technology and will continue to develop and supply a wide range of products and services that meet the needs of frontline medicine in various fields, contributing to streamlining clinical work, enhancing the quality of medical care and maintaining and strengthening people's health.

Düsseldorf Appeal Court rejects Nazdar appeals and fully confirms two 2018 judgements issued in Fujifilm’s favour

Court finds for patent infringement by Nazdar’s 702 & 703 UV inkjet inks in Germany, and Federal Patents court in Munich meanwhile further confirms patent validity.

On November 14, 2019, the Higher Regional Court of Düsseldorf, Germany fully confirmed two judgements issued on September 13, 2018 by the Regional Court of Düsseldorf against Nazdar’s UV inkjet inks 702 & 703 Series and rejected Nazdar’s and its German distributor Zaro’s respective appeals (docket nos. I-15 U 71/18 and I-15 U 72/18).

Mr Rob Fassam, R&D Director at Fujifilm Specialty Ink Systems (FSIS) comments:

“I am delighted that the Higher Regional Court in Düsseldorf has confirmed our position and the first instance judgement. This sends a clear message to anyone thinking of infringing our intellectual property”.

In 2017 FSIS had filed suit against Nazdar Co., US and Nazdar Limited, UK as well as its German distributor Zaro GmbH before the Regional Court Düsseldorf for infringement of its UV ink patents EP 1 803 784 B3 and EP 2 383 314 B3 in Germany by offering its 702 & 703 UV inkjet ink Series claimed to be chemically compatible with the original inks for Océ Arizona and Fujifilm Acuity printers.

The patents protect specific inkjet ink compositions, providing a range of properties including improved flexibility, jetting performance and adhesion.

In first instance, the Regional Court of Düsseldorf issued injunctions against Nazdar and Zaro. In reaction to FSIS’s patent claims, Nazdar changed the chemical composition of its UV inkjet inks. However, Nazdar continued to market its UV inkjet inks as 702 & 703 Series, and also further failed to indicate to customers the change in chemical composition in a way that FSIS considered necessary to avoid patent infringement.

Upon appeal by Nazdar/Zaro, the Higher Regional Court of Düsseldorf has fully confirmed the first instance judgement. Nazdar and Zaro therefore remain injuncted from offering, bringing into the market and use of patent infringing UV inkjet inks in the future in Germany and are sentenced to pay damages and render account. Furthermore, the Appeal Court upheld the first decision in that the change in chemical composition of the 702 & 703 Series is not sufficient to avoid infringement if Nazdar continues to market their UV inkjets inks as 702 & 703 Series without sufficient indication of the product change.

Finally, while without prejudice for the nullity proceedings filed by Nazdar against the patents before the German Federal Patents Court in Munich, the Higher Regional Court in Düsseldorf, like the first instance decision, did not follow Nazdar’s invalidity arguments and therefore rejected Nazdar’s motion to stay its decision. Meanwhile and in line with that, with judgement of January 14, 2020, the Federal Patent Court has also rejected the first nullity action of Nazdar against EP 1 803 784 B3 and fully upheld the patent (docket no. 3 Ni 2/19). The nullity action against the second patent EP 2 383 314 B3 will be heard on February 18, 2020 (docket no. 3 Ni 5/19). Due to the decision to uphold the first patent, FSIS is confident that the Federal Patents Court will similarly also uphold the second patent.

In the infringement proceedings, the Düsseldorf Appeal Court has not admitted a further appeal against its decision. Nazdar/Zaro may now only file an appeal against this decision of non-admittance within one month after service. However, even in such case the judgements remain enforceable without any further prerequisites. In the nullity proceedings before the Federal Patents Court in Munich, Nazdar may file appeals, but again FSIS is confident that, should such appeal be lodged, it would remain unsuccessful.

Mr Rob Fassam:

“We invest significant time and resource developing new and exciting technology that benefits the inkjet industry. We will continue to protect our investment by filing patents that cover our technology and will take appropriate action against those who infringe.”

FUJIFILM Speciality Ink Systems Limited is the Technology Center of Excellence for UV curable ink within the FUJIFILM Inkjet Business Division. Its core skills are the development and manufacture of high performance UV curing inks that are used in many of the world’s leading printers.
