They are photo enthusiasts and experts in their field. In our opinion these heroes deserve a spotlight, therefore we will ask every month one Hero to tell his or her story.

This time we have interviewed Peter Schubert, CEO of
. Peter Schubert is well respected within the German photo industry with years of experience, as a professional photographer and a true photo enthusiast. Starting as a professional photographer with a dream, he is now CEO and a true Original, who puts a lot of heart into constantly providing the best print quality over and over again; via his photo lab in Dresden.

Who is PixelfotoExpress?

PixelfotoExpress is a specialist laboratory founded in Dresden in 2005, which supplies to professional photographers and end customers throughout Europe, each of whom have a high quality standard. The philosophy of the company has always been to orient itself, through direct customer contact, to the constantly changing needs of the business partners. And to show them that, as far as possible, there are no limits in terms of service and the product portfolio. For example, in addition to classic photo products, various murals are also produced on site; some of which are subject to a complex production process. The young team wants to be positioned as far as possible away from the photo mass market with its work, and therefore relies entirely on the individuality of its customers. Which is why they have a selection of all available Fujifilm paper surfaces at PixelfotoExpress. The company is one of the first photo labs in Europe to include new papers in its already extensive range. When the new Pearl paper appeared in 2007, it was exactly this strategy that led to a huge increase in prominence. Which means that PixelfotoExpress stays true to its values in this regard. As well as the promise of a fast delivery of high quality photo products. After all, delivery in an already fast-paced time is a matter of urgency, and this is reflected in the name of the company.

Who is Peter Schubert?

I am the CEO of FotoCo + GmbH and since 1989 a professional photographer. On one hand, the PixelfotoExpress brand has a particular focus on the strategic direction of the company, but on the other hand, the interests of my employees are also significant to me. For me, good contact with the team is crucial for the successful implementation of economic goals. Only if we all stand together behind our corporate philosophy, we can deliver good products. In addition to my job as CEO, photography has always been my main occupation. This helps me to understand the needs of our customers and make ground-breaking decisions for the company.

Could you tell us about your professional background?

Shortly after my training as a photographer and professional photographer I realized that I wanted to be self-employed. At first, in 1988, I took over a small photo shop in the city center. Back then, I wanted to offer my customers more than just a portrait and passport photo service. Thanks to the reunification and new technical possibilities, the range of services offered by FOTO Schubert from Dresden gradually expanded. In addition to the portrait, advertising and industrial photography, in which I was also active for large corporations, I was able to pursue a long-desired dream from this point on and establish myself in the field of aerial photography. This was followed by the pilot's license for UL and the helicopter and balloon's driver's license. As the only photo lab in the world, we now operate a hot air balloon that we not only use for advertising purposes, but also to open fantastic new perspectives for our customers, friends and business partners on a journey across the famous Elbe metropolis.

What has inspired you to enter into the photographic printing business?

In my work as a photographer, I have always had problems with finding photo labs that could convince me of good quality and fast delivery times. With the emergence of the first digital SLR cameras at the beginning of the 2000s, the large-scale laboratories, which are fully specialized in analogue photography, often could not keep up with the new age. Generally they completely failed the necessary transformation process. In the transition to the digital age of photography they just could not react fast enough to the developments. But because I had a very good order situation myself, I urgently needed a way to quickly and reliably develop photos. With the advent of minilabs, I suddenly had the opportunity to simply develop my own images. The increasing ease of use and good results opened the door to the digital age, at least for me. It quickly became clear that Fujifilm is technically in the lead, so I soon started processing pictures with the first LP-570. Incidentally, this very first machine is still in use now every day, even after several million prints later. For me, it is also a confirmation that the investments made 15 years ago have paid off completely. After confirming the technology being solid and the quality of the photos meeting the requirements far more than initially expected, the next step was consequently the founding of a separate laboratory.

What is it that you are most passionate about?

The challenge is to constantly provide the best picture quality again and again. If you want to achieve a good result, you have to put a lot of heart into it. That is exactly what I fortunately have never lost, because photos have a very personal value for me today. Data in a cloud can be lost without being able to do anything about it. Who didn't already lose digital data? Pictures that you can hold in your hand are truly something that are lasting.

How do you think digitalization has influenced the photographic printing business?

Almost all people today take a lot of pictures, not only in the Western world. Nowadays, most pictures are taken with a smartphone. Often, of course, it's just snapshots or selfies. But digitalization has made it possible for many people to take photos at a very high level. There are so many pictures, today more than ever before. Almost everyone with a camera has probably already tried to take artistic pictures. Maybe more or less unconsciously. But art is very diverse. There are also amateur photographers who take spectacular landscape shots. At any rate, impressive pictures are often taken by people who are not originally trained as photographers. There are many talents that not even every professional can hold a candle to. Of course, this is a great opportunity for us as a photo lab. Many enthusiasts order very professionally designed photo calendars or murals of their favourite subjects. They give away their photos to family, friends and acquaintances. Sometimes they even have exhibitions or sell the works on a small scale. For the photographers this means a new kind of competition, and they have to think about how they want to convince others to further their career as professionals. Unfortunately, many try to sell their work below value, which may cause frustration for one or the other. Others may lose their motivation and only work in a limited way. In my view, it is important to discover the love of photography again. Quality through dedication is the key and quality has its price. If this awareness exists with the photographer, then he or she can communicate this better to customers and be successful despite new challenges.

What do you like most about Fujifilm original photo papers?

Since the existence of PixelfotoExpress we have experienced a consistently high quality of Fujifilm papers. No fluctuations in quality have annoyed us so far. Poor quality could significantly damage the reputation of the brand. That's why we are very happy that we always have positive experiences with Fujifilm papers. We also find it great that the product range is constantly evolving and that there are so many ways to put the picture in the limelight with photo paper. This begins with the finishing as a mural, for example, with lamination of the real photo behind acrylic, and does not end with the latest trends. Some even represent a renaissance of earlier times, such as the very popular retro print.

Do you have a favourite Fujifilm original photo paper?

Pearl is still my favourite photo paper since it hit the market in 2007. It lets the colours shine with a metallic shimmer. This impresses many observers. But the new Velvet photo paper is also an increasingly popular product. Not only with our customers, but also with me. It is completely different from other papers and allows you to be creative and to try new ideas. It has a very matte surface that reproduces the tonal values in an unusual way that is difficult to describe. Whatever your experience as a photo artist is, Velvet photo paper should be tried at least once.

How do you see the future of the professional printing business?

Photos have not lost its importance, even if that was exactly what was already foreseen by many. There have been some major changes in the market in recent years and there is still a lot of movement there. The new technologies, the internet and digitization have completely reshuffled the cards. At the beginning of this change, there was a big boom in the sale of digital SLR cameras. This has been declining for some time. People do not buy every new model anymore. Nevertheless, they continue to take more pictures, not less. Just the methods have changed a little. In the future it will be important to be able to react to new challenges. We have already developed concepts for this and are already starting to implement them. At this point, I cannot say too much about this... However, it should be said that photographers face challenges and so many professionals must probably do their homework here. At any rate, focusing on quality is the right path. Both for the photographer, as well as for us.

What advice would you give to upcoming photographers?

There are many photographers who put a lot of time into the processing of their pictures and are therefore often very successful. Even many young photographers are taking the planning of a shoot seriously. That's great. On the other hand, there are also photographers who still work in the style of the 80s and 90s. Unfortunately most only have rudimentary basic knowledge of colour management. Some prefer to edit pictures on their laptop in the garden rather than on a regular monitor under standard lighting conditions. You are only successful if you always keep your heart in the matter and try to make a job professional. Even if the times are a bit more difficult now and then. Especially then it is important to motivate yourself again, to educate yourself, to learn new things; at least not to sit back. Customers feel very clearly whether someone is passionate about their job or not. If the photographer stops doing things at some point, it usually does not take long for sales to drop. Therefore, I recommend for you to never lose heart and to constantly work on yourself.

Europe’s first Jet Press 750S installation brings multiple benefits to FloriColor

Portuguese photo album printer sees immediate speed, quality and environmental benefits, as well as the opportunity to move into new markets

FloriColor is one of the leading producers of professional photography albums in the world. From its premises in Portugal it serves customers in 27 countries around the globe, producing wedding, new born, communion and boudoir albums for some of the world’s leading portrait photographers.

When Fujifilm announced FloriColor as one of the first companies to confirm its investment in the newly launched Jet Press 750S in late 2018, the company cited a combination of environmental benefits, extra speed and the ability to diversify its offering as its reasons for investing.

With installation completed in February 2019, FloriColor is now in a position to confirm whether the reality has lived up to the promise.

We knew the Jet Press 750S was going to help us turn jobs around much faster, and we have not been disappointed,

says CEO Tiago Yu.

Perhaps the best way of illustrating the true extent of this is with a real example from very shortly after the Jet Press was installed. We were preparing to exhibit at the WPPI (Wedding & Portrait Photography International) Expo in Las Vegas, as we do every year, and I asked my team (who were still in training on the Jet Press at the time) to print five sample albums for me to take to the US with me. My instruction was misheard, and the team printed 50 albums instead. Using our silver halide printers, this would have taken around ten hours. On the Jet Press it took 30 minutes. I can’t think of a better way of illustrating the additional speed we have at our disposal than that!

For a company like FloriColor though, even a speed increase this significant would be of no value without the quality to match.

Our customers are all highly regarded professional photographers,

says Yu.

Their standards are extremely high – we even work with one who charges up to €80,000 to shoot a single wedding. These people are typically sceptical of the ability of any digital press to get close to silver halide levels of quality – until we show them something printed on the Jet Press that is! We have been exploring and investing in digital technology for 20 years, but the Jet Press is the first digital machine that we, and our customers, have been comfortable to use for high end photo album production.

FloriColor is also a company that takes its environmental responsibilities extremely seriously.

We have a duty to future generations to do everything we can to reduce our environmental impact,

says Yu.

We took steps last year to eliminate almost all the plastic from our packaging, and our Jet Press investment is a major step in reducing the environmental impact of our production processes. The Jet Press uses virtually no chemistry whatsoever, and I don’t think there’s a more eco-friendly alternative available anywhere on the market that offers that level of quality.

Though FloriColor’s Jet Press investment has, to date, primarily served its existing professional photographer clients, Yu still very much has his sights set on the opportunities the Jet Press provides to diversify and grow into new markets:

We’re immensely proud of the reputation we’ve built up over many years as one of the leading professional photo album printers in the world,

he says.

The Jet Press is only enhancing this reputation. But it also provides the opportunity to grow into other markets. Where we see an especially strong opportunity, given current industry trends, is in the short run luxury catalogue market. With the Jet Press we believe we could, in time, become a major player in this sector.

Overall, we’ve been delighted with the investment decision,

Yu concludes.

Though it was a big step for us, the fact that we were making the investment with Fujifilm gave us a huge amount of confidence. For 40 years they’ve been providing us with photographic papers and associated chemistry, and with service and support of the highest standard. There’s no company we’d rather be partnering with on this next stage of our journey.

Ester Viola signs the original tale "Two Sisters"

"Whatever happened to me in life has always been polluted by three words.
Genes, inheritance. Cancer. It's like I've been waiting for it for twenty years, cancer.
I thought about the day of the thesis, the day the mortgage was signed, the day Marco was born.
It's stupid in its own way, but it happens. I never wondered why.
Perhaps worrying, I show to the life that I'm on my guard
and life to reward me, take away the danger? "

by Ester Viola for Fujifilm

An original tale splitted in five moments, from the expectation of the diagnosis to the future perspective: it is the work that Ester Viola, lawyer, Twitter star and writer, has signed for Fujifilm, with the aim of dealing with an intimate approach through literature a topic that up until a few years ago was unmentionable: cancer.

The approach to the disease has changed, because the diagnosis, which is increasingly precocious and precise, and the increasingly decisive treatment have changed radically. Today we can be cured. And if you can cure yourself, you can heal. There is a future for patients, as suggested by the title "Talks on Tomorrow", the format dedicated to sharing issues which affects society and how technology can help to solve them, which will host the appointment "Health Screening: the new technologies for the fight against breast cancer".

The event, scheduled for Friday 11 October in Milan at 18.00 at the Feltrinelli Foundation in Viale Pasubio 5, will feature six top opinion leaders: Daniela Minerva, life science journalist, Riccardo Giovanazzi, Breast Unit Director of ASST Monza, Davide Campari, General Manager Fujifilm Italy, Enrico Cassano, IEO Radiology Director, Cinzia Sasso, journalist and patient, Rosanna D'Antona, Europa Donna President, and the writer Ester Viola.

Fujifilm, which has over 80 years of experience in the medical sector and is among the leading players in digital mammography, has chosen October, "Breast Awareness Month", as a moment of contact with the woman and the high-tech diagnostics sector, to raise awareness of the importance of prevention as the main tool in the fight against breast cancer.

"Fujifilm Medical Systems is constantly evolving, our mission is to design and develop solutions that improve the health of individuals and make the work of healthcare professionals more precise and faster. We are active in the fields of prevention, diagnostics and treatment with technologies and systems for digital diagnostics, endoscopy, medical informatics, point of care diagnostics and in-vitro diagnostics. A deep and complete competence in which we invest 7% each year in research and development. - emphasizes Davide Campari, General Manager of Fujifilm Italy Medical Systems Division - Thanks to the Talks on Tomorrow event, we wish to emphasize the importance of the evolution of diagnostic technologies in breast cancer prevention, talking about it together with the leading experts in the Italian scene. And for the first time, we wanted to turn our attention to women, trying to sensitize them to the issues of prevention through an unusual language, but strongly intimate as the tale written by Ester Viola. "

women have experienced, through a text with temporal leaps that refer to mothers, grandmothers, sick aunts before them: Emilia and Elena are two sisters of our times. The stylistic choice suggests in the memories, in the "hearsay", in the epilogues the fact that also the psychological approach has changed thanks to science and technology. We do not fully realize that in the battle against tumors there are "technological" allies created by very human scientists.

"I wanted to tell the drama of cancer by choosing feelings as protagonists - says Ester Viola -. Anxiety and fear - two of the worst. On the other hand, instead, courage, hope. There are the lucidity and lack of lucidity that intertwine in the two protagonists, two sisters so different in character: Elena, the apprehensive one, and then Emilia, so calm. The parts are reversed because Emilia. From the first diagnosis to anesthesia, they remain united, to protect themselves, even if in different ways. Doctors, examinations and reports are the background to underline the importance of medicine and prevention, which should be - indeed must become - an imperative. It must not be just a choice of some, prevention. It must come first. "

Narrated by the intense voice of the actress Mariella Valentini, the tale by Ester Viola can be enjoyed starting October 20 through a podcast on the Storytel platform. The stories can also be heard in the waiting rooms of the clinics of the senologists who adhere to the project.

Furthermore, ten exclusive works by the artist Maurizio Galimberti, Fujifilm instax Ambassador, as well as icon of global instant photography, will be dedicated to women and will be exhibited at the Feltrinelli Foundation during the 11th October event. The artworks are part of a larger project of “traveling exhibitions” also hosted in hospital waiting rooms. “La Carezza” is the title of the exhibition: the images tell the woman through the "ready made" technique that focuses attention on the detail, highlighted by an instant photograph. The face, the body, the expression of the eyes, the aptitude for movement are the center of attention of the work created with Fujifilm instax Square SQ20 and are enriched by a "pink" element to evoke the mood of the month of prevention.

-Offering many unique and enjoyable functions to play with friends
-Intuitive operability and excellent portability broaden the way to enjoy photographs

FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Kenji Sukeno) announces the launch of the smartphone printer “
” on or after October 4, 2019 on a market-by-market basis.

<youtube>5ZgRLDk1II0</youtube>

The Link creates high-quality instax prints of pictures saved in a smartphone through dedicated app*1 using Bluetooth*2. The app offers a function to choose the best frame from video to print, and also a variety of unique and enjoyable functions that can be used among many people such as a compatibility checker that examines compatibility between you and a friend or someone special, and a function that lets multiple people send their favorite pictures from their smartphone to the printer and compiles them into single instax print. The palm-top compact printer weighs just 200g for excellent portability, making it a fun tool that can be taken to any locations to enjoy photo opportunities.

The Link won the Good Design Award 2019 in recognition of its compact and lightweight design in pursuit of portability and its simple yet intuitive operability.

The company will also release a new instax mini film “MERMAID TAIL,” which uses a glossy frame to add a touch of flamboyance to pictures for further broadening the way to enjoy instax prints. The “MERMAID TAIL” will be launch on or after October 18 on a market-by-market basis.

Compatibility check with instax prints

Overview of the new “instax mini Link”

The new Link printer inherits all the features of the instax Series to produce high-quality prints quickly with ease, while using the dedicated app offering a variety of additional functions to enjoy among many people, including “Video Print” for printing a decisive moment in a video. The “Match Test” function, which tests your compatibility with a friend or someone special, provides a moment of anticipation while you wait for the test result to appear along with the picture on the instax print. The “Party Print” function, which produces single print from multiple pictures sent from smartphones by up to five people, generates excitement as everyone waits to see what kind of picture everyone else has sent in. The printer can be a perfect tool to bring lively energy into any get-togethers.

The Link’s main unit carries a built-in motion sensor. When taking pictures from the printer’s dedicated app on your smartphone, you can use the Link to remotely control the camera operation. For example, you can zoom in by facing down the side of the power button at the center, zoom up by facing up, and release the shutter by pressing the power button. The Link is functional as a remote-controller to take a photo of a large group of people with your smartphone’s camera with ease. The Link also pursues intuitive operability by allowing you to reprint the picture with holding the Link with the printout end pointing down and press the button at the center, and transfer picture to the printer by swiping up (running your finger upward from the bottom of the screen) on the app. The main unit weighs just 200g and uses a metallic material to key parts such as the power button at the center to realize a simple yet fashionable design,

Overview of the “instax” Series

The “instax” series of instant cameras, launched in 1998, is affectionately called “Cheki” in Japan, where it has enjoyed wide popularity for over 20 years. Today, it is sold in over 100 countries around the world, including Japan, Europe, Americas, and Asia, with the cumulative number of 45 million units worldwide*3. It has gained broad-based popularity as a tool that generates real-life communication, with many users saying “It is fun to share those precious moments in life in the form of instax prints. It gives me a real sense of connection with friends when I hand instax prints to them.”

About the promotion

Coinciding with the launch of the new “instax mini Link,” Fujifilm will run a worldwide promotional campaign under the catch phrase “Don’t just take, give,” to convey instax prints’ unique value. The company will showcase the features of the Link, through online media and retail stores, highlighting its use as a communication tool to casually print a large collection of precious images kept in a smartphone as a way of conveying one’s feelings, or as an “entertainment printer filled with warmth.”

Jet Press 750S awarded Fogra certification for contract proofing

Accreditation makes Fujifilm’s third generation B2 inkjet press both the world’s fastest contract proofing device and the world’s only production press certified for contract proofing

Fujifilm today announces that its highly regarded third generation B2 inkjet press has been awarded Fogra certification for contract proofing, including FOGRA51 and FOGRA52 accreditation for premium coated and uncoated wood-free substrates respectively. This follows tests carried out at Fujifilm’s Advanced Print Technology Centre in Brussels, using Fujifilm’s own proprietary XMF ColorPath colour management software.

The exhaustive testing process assessed and approved the Jet Press for:

PDF/X conformance

Proofing substrate colour, gloss and fluorescence

Colour accuracy [gamut]

Uniformity, permanence and light fastness

Fading [drift]

Long and short term repeatability

Rub resistance

Colorimetric tone value transfer

Tone value reproduction limits

Image register and resolving power

Margin informatio

With tests carried out on coated and uncoated offset stocks, coated inkjet paper, canvas and synthetic paper, the Jet Press consistently met or exceeded the required standards.

“We were very impressed with the consistency and quality of results produced by the Jet Press 750S,” says Yuan Li from the Fogra Research Institute for Media Technologies. “Only printing systems with the highest level of performance could pass tests like these."

Mark Stephenson, Digital Printing and Press Systems Product Manager, Fujifilm Graphic Systems EMEA, says that Fujifilm is delighted, but not surprised, by the results.

“For some time now,” he explains, “especially in the Japanese market, the Jet Press has enjoyed considerable success as a proofing device. It is a lot more than that of course – but we have seen it replacing the wet proofing process in Japan, in particular, as offset printers there have been quick to recognise its potential to create rapid and very high quality proofs for long run offset jobs.

“The Fogra certification confirms the very high standard of colour consistency and accuracy the Jet Press can achieve and we’re delighted to see it get this official stamp of approval. We believe this certification gives the Jet Press 750S a strong claim to be both the world’s fastest contract proofing device and the world’s only production press certified for contract proofing.”

Backing up the colour accuracy claims of the Jet Press 750S still further, it has also been awarded Digital Press Certification and the ISO/PAS 15339 Master Elite Certification from the US-based graphic arts think tank Idealliance. No other four colour digital device (other than Fujifilm’s Jet Press 720S) has both of these accreditations.
