- Bringing out the potential of large format sensors in video production to the maximum extent
- Covering focal lengths from 28mm to 250mm when combined with a standard zoom lens

FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Kenji Sukeno) is pleased to announce that it will release the telephoto zoom lens FUJINON Premista80-250mmT2.9-3.5 (“Premista80-250mm”) with a focal length of 80-250mm in December 2019. It will be the second model to join the Premista Series of zoom cinema lenses that support large-format sensors* and deliver outstanding high resolution, natural and beautiful bokeh and rich gradation with HDR (high dynamic range). The Premista80-250mm complements the FUJINON Premista28-100mmT2.9 (“Premista28-100mm”), released in August this year, to cover a broad range of focal lengths from 28mm to 250mm, further expanding focal lengths coverage that can be captured with premium image quality.

* Large image sensors that measure 43.2-46.3mm diagonally

For producing high quality videos such as Hollywood movies, there has been increasing demand for filming equipment capable of delivering beautiful bokeh and rich gradation with HDR. Accordingly, many cinematographers have been adopting cinema cameras equipped with a large format sensor. While a variety of prime lenses compatible with the large format sensors are already available in the market, there is a growing demand for zoom lenses, which cover a wide range of focal lengths without having to change lenses frequently, and therefore offer more efficient operability.

In response to such demand, Fujifilm has developed the Premista Series of zoom lenses for high-performance cinema cameras equipped with a large format sensor. The Premista28-100mm, the first model in this Series released in August this year, has been praised by professionals of video production for “edge-to-edge sharpness” and “coverage of the most frequently-used focal lengths for exceptional convenience.”

The Premista80-250mm is a telephoto zoom lens covering focal lengths from 80mm to 250mm. Featuring large-diameter aspherical lens elements and unique focusing / zooming system, the lens achieves an astonishing level of edge-to-edge sharpness. The use of 13-blade iris design, combined with shallow depth-of-field which is a characteristic of large format sensors, produces natural and beautiful bokeh to faithfully capture the subject's texture, three-dimensional definition and even an atmosphere of the scene. Furthermore, the lens applies Fujifilm's unique optical design to minimize ghosts and flares, thereby creating rich gradation with HDR and bringing out the full potential of large-format sensors.

The Premista80-250mm can be paired with the Premista28-100mm to cover focal lengths from 28mm to 250mm, capturing scenes with broad background in wide angle as well as closing in on a subject from a distance in telephoto. The two lenses also share the same front diameter and the gear position for three rings. This ensures efficient operability, as users can fit the same matte box, follow-focus system and other accessories, without re-adjusting accessory positions when changing between the two lenses.

Fujifilm has led the cinema industry since its foundation in 1934 to achieve domestic production of photographic and motion picture films in Japan. The company's products are widely praised by videographers around the world, with the development of high-performance zoom cinema lenses winning the Emmy Award by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2017. Fujifilm will continue to tap into optical, high precision forming and assembling technologies that have been nurtured in the field of cutting-edge video production to develop a wide range of lenses, thereby addressing the diversifying needs.

Fujifilm launches “FUJIFILM LTO Ultrium8 Data Cartridge”

-Deliver the maximum 30TB of storage capacity, twice the capacity of the previous generation,
-Cost effective, secure and long term data storage,
-Fast data transfer rate of 750MB/sec.

FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Kenji Sukeno) announced that it has launched FUJIFILM LTO Ultrium8 Data Cartridge (LTO8) on September 2, 2019. Adhering to the 8th-generation LTO Ultrium* standards for magnetic tape storage media, the LTO8 will allow for backup and archive of large-capacity data, using the barium ferrite (BaFe) magnetic particles with its outstanding recording/retrieval performance and long-term durability. It offers a storage capacity of 30TB (12TB for non-compressed data), twice the capacity of the previous generation**. It is also capable of transferring data at 750MB/sec. (360MB/sec. for non-compressed). With its ability to provide secure and long term storage of massive data at a low cost, LTO8 responds to the increasing demand for data storage.

The amount of data generated worldwide has exponentially increased in recent years with the expansion of high-definition 4K and 8K video, development of IoT and ICT and the utilization of AI for Big Data analysis. This includes “cold-data,” or data that was generated a long time ago and rarely accessed, and is estimated to account for more than 80% of all data. As the utilization of accumulated data, including cold data, rapidly increases, so does the need for reliable and cost effective long term storage of such data for future use. Magnetic tapes have been used among major data centers and research organizations for many years as magnetic tapes not only offer large storage capacity, low cost and long-term storage performance, but also create “air gap” data protection, physically isolated from the network, which minimize the risk of data damage or loss caused by cyber attacks. In the future, magnetic tapes are expected to be used in cutting edge research fields where generate a large amount of data, such as AI / IoT-based smart manufacturing to achieve high-quality and highly efficient production, and future connected cars.

Fujifilm has developed the fine BaFe magnetic particles with outstanding magnetic properties and long-term storage performance and launched the world's first commercial BaFe data storage cartridge in 2011. In 2012, the company launched LTO6, the first LTO Ultrium Standard data cartridge product using BaFe magnetic particles. Foreseeing the capacity limitations in the traditional metal magnetic particles, Fujifilm's early commercialization of BaFe magnetic tapes has allowed the company to consistently lead the market.

With LTO8, Fujifilm has further developed its unique “NANOCUBIC technology***” to produce even smaller BaFe magnetic particles than those used in the LTO7. The magnetic particles are separated by highly controlled dispersion process and the tape surface roughness is controlled, achieving smooth surface of magnetic layer with enhanced NANO coating technology. In this way, Fujifilm has increased the storage capacity up to 30TB (12TB for non-compressed data), twice the capacity of LTO7, high speed data transfer reaching750MB/sec. (360MB/sec. for non-compressed data). Furthermore, appropriate material design has allowed for high tracking performance and durability for the magnetic heads in the tape drives, boost reliability showing stable and excellent performance.

Since the launch of LTO1 in 2000, Fujifilm has consistently developing high-performance and high-quality magnetic tapes with large data capacity. As the world's top*4 manufacturer of magnetic tapes for data storage, Fujifilm will continue to develop and supply high-performance and high-quality media and services that satisfy customer needs and expectations, thereby helping to solve social issues.

*Linear Tape-Open, LTO, the LTO logo, Ultrium and the Ultrium logo are registered trademarks of Hewlett Packard Enterprise, IBM and Quantum in the United States of America and in other countries.
**FUJIFILM LTO Ultrium7 Data Cartridge that complies with the 7th-generation LTO Ultrium standards
***Fujifilm's nanotechnology-based magnetic tape technology with thin coating to achieve high-density magnetic data recording. It consists of the “nano-particle technology” for formulating magnetic particles into nano-sized particles, “nano-dispersion technology” for evenly dispersing and arranging nano-sized magnetic particles, and “nano-coating technology” for achieving the coating of the ultra-thin layer.
*4 Manufacturer share, according to Fujifilm data

Every professional print lab has its own hero, this hero ensures the highest possible quality to be delivered to the customer. They are photo enthusiasts and experts in their field. In our opinion these heroes deserve a spotlight, therefore each month we will ask one of these heroes to tell their story.

This time we have interviewed Steve Butler, Print Director at
. Discussing future products or imaging development with Steve and the Genesis team is always inspirational, but most important, retrieving valuable and honest feedback. Steve is highly respected within the imaging print world, having years of experience, a passion for photography, staying innovative and a keen eye for good quality prints.

Who is Genesis Imaging?

Having been first established as Genesis Laboratory Ltd in 1997 by Ken Sethi and Howard Lee, Genesis has grown from its roots as a conventional laboratory to offer comprehensive in-house printing, mounting and framing services, alongside a range of new premium display graphics services. Driven by innovation, Genesis Imaging has remained at the forefront of photographic printing through its commitment to innovation and adaptation to change.

Who is Steve Butler?

Hello! I am the Print Director of Genesis Imaging and I am the person responsible for maintaining consistency and quality across our print services, on a range of media.

Could you please tell us about your professional background?

Sure! I’ve been printing for over thirty years. My first job was as a black and white printing technician in a small lab in Swindon. From there, I moved to the local newspaper which gave me the experience of working to tight deadlines and equipped me with the skills to do so.

I really loved large format printing, and a move to London threw me back into the darkroom, and later into digital. I was the Print Manager of a quite prominent lab on North End Road over 20 years ago, but my lab’s lack of interest in digital – and Genesis Imaging’s forward-thinking attitude – made me move on to a new position in Genesis, and I haven’t looked back. I was happy to work my way up again as a C-type printing technician, knowing this company had a bright future.

What has inspired you to enter into the photographic printing business?

I’ve loved photography for as long as I can remember. When I was just 9 years old I found an old Ilford Sportsman Auto RF in a jumble sale and I soon began printing with an old Durst M301 enlarger in a converted cupboard in my bedroom. I really liked the challenge of fumbling around with a darkroom bag, trying to get my film on the processing spiral and then later, during processing, seeing images appear before my eyes in the trays.

What is it that you are most passionate about?

Quite simply, my passion is centred on creating the best quality imagery possible – for myself, but more importantly for the client. I’ve just finished a project for a client who is based in Tel Aviv and as they were unable to approve the prints in person, I sent physical tests and also some video footage to show them the quality that we had achieved. It was great to document each stage and to share this with the client and, even better, they loved the finished results!

How do you think digitalisation has influenced the photographic printing business?

Working in darkrooms can be an isolating experience. The digitalisation of photographic printing has changed the working environment of printers from the darkroom – to an office, where we can work more collectively. Digitalisation has also allowed for much faster turnarounds then conventional methods would ever allow and for Genesis, has meant that services such as Direct to Media printing can be introduced – utilising the benefits of UV ink (we can produce prints that are weather-proof!) and new flexibility in printing using a wide range of substrates. Giclée Fine Art printing, ChromaLuxe Fine Art printing and our Creative Retouching services also allow our clients greater flexibility than ever before.

What do you like most about Fujifilm original photo papers?

I’ve always loved the clarity, colour saturation and stability of Fuji Crystal Archive photographic media.

Do you have any favourite types of Fujifilm photo papers?

I absolutely love the Fuji Crystal Archive DPII Matt because it has more of a satin-feel, which places it perfectly between a typical matt and a gloss paper.

How do you see the future of the professional printing business?

I believe there will always be a call for professionally produced images. The quality, flexibility of processes, and the size that can be reproduced simply cannot be matched by small home inkjet printers, or high street labs.

What advice would you give to upcoming photographers?

Network, connect, and get involved in the photography community.

Find your Niche. Your personality is portrayed through your photos, and your niche is your special area of interest and the way you see the world.

If you act confident, you will be seen as confident. This perceived confidence will boost your actual confidence, which in turn, will allow your skill to shine through. Bottom line: if you act confident, then you will become confident. Don’t be arrogant though!

Speak to your photographic lab about the benefits of different printing and finishing processes, and together find the perfect solution. Working collaboratively often gets the best results!

-First win for the GFX Series and 9th consecutive win for the X Series

FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Kenji Sukeno) is pleased to announce that
(GFX100), GFX Series of mirrorless digital cameras carrying the Large Format sensor* approximately 1.7 times the size of the 35mm full-frame sensor, and the
(X-T3), X Series of mirrorless digital cameras carrying the APS-C sensor, have both won the <link https://www.eisa.eu/ _blank external-link-new-window>EISA Awards
**. The GFX100 which realizes extraordinary image quality captured by its sensor boasting the world's highest resolution of 102 million pixels*** was chosen as the Best Product in “Camera Innovation 2019 - 2020”. The X-T3 which achieves fast and accurate and fast autofocus was named the Best Product in “Advanced Camera 2019 - 2020.” This is the first EISA Award the company has won for the GFX Series and marks the ninth-consecutive win for the X Series.

Toshi Iida, General Manager, Optical Device and Electronic Imaging Products Division, commented,

We are very pleased to be recognised by EISA in this way. Both cameras are proving to be very popular and their success is testament to our years of investment in sensor, processor, and optical technologies. My team is passionate about getting it right for our customers. Looking at the demand for these two models, it seems we got things about as right as we could. Demand for the GFX100, especially, has massively exceeded our expectations.

EISA CAMERA INNOVATION 2019-2020 – The “FUJIFILM GFX100” Digital Camera

Commenting on the GFX100, the judges said,

With the GFX100, Fujifilm has made a 100-megapixel medium format camera that does not suffer from the restraints usually associated with large-sensor, high-resolution systems. As the first camera of this type with in-body image stabilisation, it can be used for handheld shooting under a much wider range of conditions. The spring-mounted shutter mechanism is isolated from the sensor, minimising the risk of shutter vibration affecting the sharpness. The GFX100 is also the first medium format camera to offer on-sensor phase detection, which results in much faster autofocus. What's more, it's the first medium format camera to shoot 4K video with no field-of-view crop.

EISA ADVANCED CAMERA 2019-2020 – The “FUJIFILM X-T3” Digital Camera

Commenting on the X-T3, the judges said,

With the X-T3, Fujifilm takes its popular X system to a higher level. The new 26-megapixel X-Trans CMOS 4 image sensor does not require a low-pass filter and therefore delivers unusually detailed images. The camera features extremely fast autofocus and continuous shooting at up to 30fps, making it well suited for action photography. The video mode is equally impressive, offering 4K recording at 60fps along with professional features such as F-Log and Hybrid Log Gamma. Photographers who don't need all of the X-T3's advanced features should also consider its less-expensive sister model, the X-T30.

Fujifilm will continue to work on the development of excellent products and services that address user needs, thereby contributing to the further development of photographic culture.

Cancer informatics and digital pathology provider Inspirata and radiology enterprise imaging specialists Fujifilm announced today a commercial partnership which enables Fujifilm to supply and service Inspirata’s digital pathology solutions in the United Kingdom.

With increased NHS interest in digital pathology as a vehicle for reducing cancer case turnaround times, caused in part by a chronic shortage in histopathologists, the wholly complementary nature of Inspirata and Fujifilm’s respective technologies bridges a technical gap between pathology, radiology and oncology, facilitating a more joined-up and longitudinal approach to patient care.

Fujifilm’s expertise in advanced IT solutions and service delivery is exceptional,

details Inspirata EVP and co-founder, Dr Mark Lloyd.

Their experienced team have a proven record of delivering, implementing and servicing national healthcare IT solutions and represent the perfect partner for Inspirata as we respond to ever-increasing UK demand for our digital pathology and cancer informatic services.

With both organisations having proactively embraced an ‘open’ or ‘vendor-neutral’ approach to supporting their customers, the Inspirata and Fujifilm partnership is one borne out of a shared commitment to providing NHS trusts with the freedom and flexibility to utilise only the technologies that are right for them. In addition to affording genuine choice in both how and with whom NHS trusts can transition to digital pathology, this partnership also provides Inspirata customers with the option to utilise Fujifilm’s award-winning vendor-neutral archive, while simultaneously enhancing Inspirata’s current DICOM capabilities should this file format prove itself sufficiently robust as a universal standard for digital pathology.

This partnership makes great business sense as it enables both Inspirata and Fujifilm to focus 100% on their respective core competencies without fear of becoming overstretched by trying to be all things, to all people,

explains Inspirata’s European GM, Tim Wing.

However, in blending the digital pathology expertise of Inspirata, with the advanced IT solutions and experience of large-scale implementation of Fujifilm, and both organisations’ relentless focus on openness and empowering Trusts in their choice of hardware, it is very evident that the real beneficiaries are going to be our shared UK customers and ultimately NHS patients.

In deciding to provide digital pathology services in the UK our evaluation of potential partners focussed on two important criteria,

explains Kevin Shah, Head of Enterprise New Business, Fujifilm Europe.

First, the partner had to offer an innovative, best-in-class technology complete with unparalleled subject matter expertise. Secondly, it was imperative that they share the commitment to openness and vendor neutrality for which we have become synonymous. Inspirata deliver on both counts and as such our combined partnership will see us deliver a truly unique solution to the UK market.
