ECR 2016: Fujifilm introduces image processing technologies designed to improve diagnostic outcomes


FUJIFILM Europe Medical Systems will introduce multiple new and improved image processing technologies at the 22nd annual European Congress of Radiology in Vienna from March 2-6. Updates to the company’s Virtual Grid technology will be showcased; expanding the use of this innovative grid simulation processing beyond chest and abdomen for the first time and boosting image quality for non-grid images across all body parts to levels previously thought to be unattainable. This new option, designed primarily for mobile use, will be shown alongside a preview of Fujifilm’s next generation of core image processing, ‘Dynamic Visualization II’. This is a generational shift which promises to further enhance image processing flexibility across the company’s CR and DR installations.

In the year since Virtual Grid was first introduced for chest and abdomen it has been used to boost image quality in a range of Fujifilm mobile installations across Europe. Offering image quality that is broadly comparable to that of a grid with up to 50% lower dose, Virtual Grid provides optimized contrast in images without the workflow or dose compromises that are inherent in the use of a traditional grid. “The use of virtualized grid technology for body parts other than chest is still in its infancy however we see great potential for this new technology to simplify mobile imaging across the board” said Susan Crennan, DR Product Manager, FUJIFILM Europe GmbH. “The use of a traditional grid for mobile imaging has always been fraught with difficulty due to the risk of malalignment rendering the images unusable. With Virtual Grid we separate the process of image acquisition and scatter removal; improving the clarity and contrast of images without compromising patient positioning and even allowing the user to change the applied ‘Grid Ratio’ after the image has been acquired.”

While Virtual Grid is clearly aimed at the improvement of mobile workflow, Fujifilm’s other new image processing development, Dynamic Visualization II, holds the potential to improve image processing flexibility in any of their CR or DR installations. Shown as a work in progress and representing the new generation of image processing technology, Dynamic Visualization II will employ new machine learning methods to improve image stability and quality independent of the patient position. Together with dedicated processing technologies for Noise Removal as well as Tomosynthesis and Energy Subtraction imaging these new developments seek to solidify Fujifilm’s already established position as a leader for image quality and demonstrate the company’s ongoing commitment to improving diagnostic outcomes in general x-ray.
