Fujifilm is pleased to announce the results of Jet Press 720 deinking trials carried out by the International Association of the Deinking Industry (INGEDE). The recent trials achieved levels of deinking previously unseen with inkjet print, and represent a milestone in the ability to remove the ink from an inkjet sheet.
Axel Fischer at INGEDE comments: ``We do these kinds of trials on a regular basis but we were very surprised with the levels of deinking that were possible with the Jet Press 720 samples. These types of results are in the same league as those achieved with offset inks but we’ve never before seen such great results with inkjet print.´´
Deinking tests by applying the INGEDE Method 11 have also been carried out by UPM, with very high scores being achieved, and results indicating the ``good deinkability´´ of sheets printed by the Jet Press 720. All quality requirements were met and four out of six parameters even fulfilled the target of 100%.
Mr Hideaki Kawai, product planning manager of the Digital Printing Business, Graphic Systems Business Division at Fujifilm’s Tokyo headquarters, adds: ``Every aspect of the Jet Press 720 has been developed to help printers to achieve the utmost efficiency, and the deinkability of the printed output is no different. We had every faith that the Jet Press 720 would achieve very positive de-inking results but INGEDE’s trials add further credence to our assertions that the Jet Press 720 offers unprecedented environmental performance.´´
Alongside the deinkability of the Jet Press 720 output, the B2 inkjet press provides a number of other significant environmental benefits. The advantage of digital print in terms of optimising the number of printed copies produced and minimising the amount of unnecessary over-runs is one key benefit, alongside a considerable reduction in the number of make-readies required. On some short-run jobs on traditional sheet-fed presses, the number of make-ready sheets can represent a significant percentage of the total run, up to 25% in some cases. This problem is significantly reduced with the Jet Press 720 as very few make-ready sheets are required.
Also, the Jet Press 720 removes the need for a number of the pressroom solutions used on a typical offset press, for example founts, sprays and potentially harmful VOC washes, and of course removes the requirement for larger quantities of water. The Jet Press 720 requires only two consumables in addition to the water-based ink. These include a wash for the inkjet print-heads and a solution used for pre-coating the paper prior to printing.
Finally, as part of the life cycle analysis Fujifilm carries out on all its products, the company estimates that the carbon footprint of the Jet Press 720 compared to an equivalent B2 sheet-fed press (internal estimate*1) is approximately 25% less.
The ground-breaking B2 sheet-fed digital inkjet press, the Jet Press 720, can be seen in action for the first time in Europe on its stand 9-CD360 at Ipex. Visitors to the show can arrange to see the press at any one of five presentations per day during which time the Jet Press 720 will demonstrate its benefits by printing a live job.
