Without these basics, whole communities are held back while others thrive.

Ernest Randriarimalala’s work with WaterAid is focused on bringing to life the daily reality faced by those denied access to clean water and sanitation, and the differences these basics can bring. He said:

“I see little kids in these villages with no access to clean water and it reminds me of my own childhood. I used to be sick all the time, just like these kids. For me this is not just a job, it’s a personal fight – to make sure that everyone, everywhere gets safe, clean water.”

This winter through its Access Denied appeal, WaterAid is aiming to raise £2 million to help bring clean water, decent sanitation and good hygiene to poor communities around the world, including in Ambohimanatrika.

Tim Wainwright, WaterAid’s Chief Executive, said:

“We are delighted to be working with Fujifilm on this unique partnership as part of our Access Denied appeal. The striking photos in the exhibition bring to life the beauty of Madagascar and the strength of its communities while highlighting the poverty that holds many back from reaching their full potential.

“Millions of people across the country and billions more around the world are denied access to safe water, decent toilets and good hygiene simply because of who they are, how much money they have, or where they live. WaterAid is committed to working towards a world where everyone everywhere has clean water to drink and decent toilets. Gaining access to these basic human rights creates a ripple of change, improving health, education and livelihoods of whole communities.”

Since 2012, Fujifilm has donated a percentage of the sales of every square metre of its processless printing plates sold in Europe, the Middle East and Africa to WaterAid. Donations to date now total over £525,000. Fujifilm’s processless plates, used in various industries including packing and newspaper printing, eliminate the processor, chemistry, gum and water used in the conventional plate production process. Unlike traditional plate processing systems, no water is used at all.

Andy Ross, Fujifilm UK’s Head of Corporate Communications said:

“Madagascar in the frame’ beautifully documents the impact of Fujifilm’s longstanding partnership with WaterAid and demonstrates how clean water and good hygiene can change communities’ for the better.

“Community is at the heart of Fujifilm’s values and we believe in making a difference right through our work, from celebrating the unique power of photography to bring stories such as those of Ernest and the children of Madagascar to life, to contributing to the sustainable development of society through the products we develop and the way we do business.”

Kaplamin Ambalaj expands corrugated print production with second Onset X investment from Fujifilm

Kaplamin Ambalaj, a Çukurova Paper and Packaging Group company providing packaging solutions to some of the biggest businesses and brands in Turkey, has added a second Onset X platform at its Prigo Digital Solution Center, which opened in December 2017.

Founded in 1976, Kaplamin Ambalaj was acquired by Çukurova Holding in 1984. In 2017, needing a digital printing solution for corrugated board in order to meet customer demand for shorter runs and faster turnarounds, the company invested in an Inca Digital Onset X1 LT platform from Fujifilm. As customer demand for short run work has continued to accelerate since that investment, Kaplamin Ambalaj needed to expand its digital capacity still further, and in late 2019 the company opted to invest in a second platform from Fujifilm and Inca Digital’s Onset X series.

The new machine, an Onset X1 model, has now been installed alongside the first, at Kaplamin Ambalaj’s Prigo Digital Solution Center, near Izmir in western Turkey. Digital corrugated board production, which stood at 40,000m2 per month has quickly doubled, and the company’s factory manager, Osman Bozcaarmutlu anticipates that running the two Onset platforms together, they will soon be producing 100,000m2 of printed corrugated board per month.

Increased production capacity for increasing demand

“Our digital printing business, which we started two years ago, has been very successful, says Mr Bozcaarmutlu. “We entered this sector in partnership with Fujifilm and we continue to work and grow with them. The Onset can print to a wide range of substrates and we’ve found it to be ideally suited to printing to corrugated board. Fujifilm was therefore the obvious choice when we came to invest in a second machine.”

Consistent production with minimum downtime

“The Onset is a very operator-friendly printing platform, engineered for hassle-free, smooth operation,” Mr Bozcaarmutlu adds. “And this, combined with Fujifilm’s excellent service and support, both online and onsite, means that machine downtime is kept to an absolute minimum. The fact that everything works so smoothly gives us the confidence to keep investing in the same technology and brand.”

Adding value to the industry

“With the creation of its Prigo brand, Kaplamin Ambalaj has brought a breath of fresh air to the corrugated printing sector,” says Cengiz Metin, General Manager of Fujifilm Turkey. “They add tremendous value with their high quality short run and customised print, as well as other display and POS materials. They are an innovative company, committed to sustainable production, and we look forward to continuing to work with and support them.”

A strong partner for highest demands with 14x magnification and the world's most powerful image stabilization

The TS-X 1440 is the new top model in the FUJINON Techno Stabi binocular series. It offers outstanding optical performance with 14x magnification and the most powerful image stabilization (±6°) for this segment worldwide. The bright, clear and stabilized image provided by these binoculars makes them perfectly suited for outdoor, wildlife and astronomical observation, marine applications and remote monitoring of industrial facilities. With its magnification capabilities, the TS-X 1440 lets spectators experience sports events and live concerts as if they were sitting in the first row.

FUJIFILM exploits its outstanding optical technologies and design concepts to meet the increasing demands in these fields of application.

The superb image stabilization is achieved thanks to the application of FUJIFILM’s proven lenses for digital cameras and television cameras: For stabilization, the oscillations registered by a gyro sensor are compensated for by a precisely controlled prism in the optical beam path. With four AA batteries, the stabilization system works about 18 hours, with rechargeable AA NiMH batteries up to 22 hours.

In addition, the large lens elements, with an effective diameter of 40 mm provide for the exceptional light intensity of the binoculars. The optimally positioned objective lens elements in three groups and eyepieces with six lens elements in four groups minimize chromatic aberration and deliver a pin-sharp image over the entire field of view. FUJIFILM's unique EBC multiple coating reduces annoying lens reflections and ghosting and increases light transmission.

With the design of the FUJINON Techno Stabi TS-X 1440, FUJIFILM shows how elegance and high functionality can be ergonomically combined in a top-of-the-range optical product.

The binoculars have no corners nor edges and are provided with a water-resistant and non-slip rubber coating. The optimized positioning of the diopter rings and the two on / off switches for the power supply and the image stabilization emphasize the high functionality. Even in difficult outdoor conditions, the FUJINON TS-X 1440 sits securely in the hand and works fast, precisely and reliably.

The new top model TS-X 1440 of the FUJINON Techno Stabi series is now available for € 1,499 (RRP).

The included accessories include:

Hundreds of photography fans from across the country queued for hours to be the first to set foot inside Fujifilm’s world-first concept store.

Eager shoppers arrived from 5.58am to get a place at the front of the line outside the new store in London's Covent Garden during its grand opening at 11am this morning (03/12).

The photography giant unveiled its three-story, 7,520 square foot store on Long Acre, featuring living walls, selfie pods and free to use photography studios.

The first customer in line was Lucia Tremonti, from London, who got up in the early hours of the morning to be the first person through the doors. She said:

“It’s really great to be here and I’m so excited to be the first one through the door!”

There were over 400 other customers who queued alongside Lucia to be first to see one-of-a-kind concept store, all travelled far and wide to be there. Number six in the queue came from Devon and was waiting outside the door at 6.15am.

The
aims to become the most photographed store in London, a sensory photography playground which puts cameras in the hands of the public to inspire and nourish a love of taking, sharing and printing photos.

Visitors will be able to pick up and play with cameras and receive expert advice as in a traditional retail store, but can also hire free studio space, test out lighting in the Midnight Studio, take their time to create a scrapbook or any photo gifting product, take pictures against the exotic flower bedecked living wall, attend seminars and workshops, get creative in the social studios, and view the Gallery, which will feature monthly-changing exhibits.

Theo Georghiades, FUJIFILM House of Photography Project Leader, said:

“Our new flagship store aims to offer a space where every kind of photographer – from smartphone snappers to professionals – can experience the magic of photo-taking and photo-making. The House of Photography is a world-first for Fujifilm, and has long been part of our vision for how consumers experience the brand – so it was fantastic to see so many visitors share in this today.

“We are thrilled that the general public joined in our excitement – just a look at the queue shows how well received the store has been. Now the House of Photography is open, visitors can expect a space for creative collaboration and photographic excellence that completely subverts the traditional approach to how consumers expect a photography store to look and feel.

“We look forward to welcoming the people of London and beyond to our sensory wonderland, and invite them to challenge their creative limits and create amazing images to share with the world.”

The FUJIFILM House of Photography will be open seven days a week, with late 8pm closing times on Friday and Saturday nights.

The first floor marries photographic creativity, social interaction and knowledge sharing with a number of free-to-use social studios, open-plan and collaborative studio spaces available for visitors to use free of charge. The floor is also home to a Gallery space with an exclusive exhibition of photographs of David Bowie by renowned photographer
, on display until the end of December. From January, the Gallery will celebrate Fujifilm’s long-standing partnership with
.

Jet Press the perfect choice to print Nick Knight ‘Roses’ project

Fujifilm Jet Press owner Emmerson Press selected to produce high quality, hardcover book to accompany exclusive photography exhibition

One of Britain’s most celebrated fashion photographers,
, has worked with some of the world’s leading fashion designers, including Yohji Yamamoto, John Galliano and Alexander McQueen. He’s photographed advertising campaigns for iconic brands like Christian Dior, Calvin Klein and Yves Saint Laurent. He’s directed music videos for Lady Gaga and Kanye West. And all the while, British photographer Nick Knight has been working on a personal project: taking photos of roses from his garden – on an iPhone.

For years Nick Knight has also been devoting several hours of his own time, on a Saturday or Sunday morning picking roses from his London garden, arranging them on his kitchen table and snapping pictures of them on his phone – exploring colour harmonies and notions of age and decay. He has then been spending a similar amount of time, on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, experimenting with Instagram filters (he makes no other edits to the photographs) and posting them for his followers to enjoy and engage with.

This year, Knight was offered the opportunity to take this very personal project beyond social media and turn it into a photographic exhibition at the exclusive Albion Barn Gallery in Oxford. The exhibition ran from late June to early November – by appointment only – and to accompany it, the gallery wanted an exclusive, case bound book of the rose photographs. The book had to be exceptionally high quality and, as an exclusive collectable for an appointment only exhibition, it also had to be very short run.

To produce such a book, Knight’s long-time collaborator, art director Paul Hetherington knew exactly where to go. Among many other projects, Hetherington and Knight had previously worked together on a promotional catalogue for up-and-coming fashion label Alyx, and for this project, Hetherington had done extensive research into the latest print technologies on the market to try to find a cost-effective, ultra-high quality option for producing a short run of large format catalogues. His research had led him eventually to the Jet Press, which he described as “the single most impressive piece of print technology” he’d seen in several years of researching the industry.

“I’ve loved the opportunity recently, to rediscover print,” Hetherington says. “For some years I was working on projects that were all online and when exploring the possibilities for the Alyx catalogue, it was exciting to see how far the possibilities in print have moved on. I enjoy thinking not just about how I want a piece of printed material to look – but how I want it to feel too. People want to be physical and tactile with print now – otherwise, why bother printing it? So I find that I start with what I want the look and feel of a printed piece to be, what materials I want it to use, what I want the texture and feel of it to be – and then work backwards from there.”

When tasked with project managing the creation of a book of Knight’s rose photographs, Hetherington turned to the Jet Press owners he’d worked with before:
in Kenilworth.

“I knew what the Jet Press was capable of and I’d worked with Emmerson’s before, so I knew they’d do whatever it took to make it happen and get it right,” says Hetherington.

Jamie Emmerson, Director at Emmerson Press, reflects on the project:

“I’d probably say it’s one of the most challenging projects I’ve ever worked on,” he says. “Simply because of the number of different techniques we had to employ. The bulk of the book was printed on our Jet Press 720S (since upgraded to a Jet Press 750S model), including all the roses pictures which were printed using the Jet Press’s Max Gamut colour functionality. There were other elements that we litho or screen printed. The attention to detail in the book is extraordinary, the textured grey slipcase for example is a visual and tactile nod to Nick Knight’s urban, concrete garden in which his roses grow. Paul Hetherington had an extremely clear vision of how he wanted the book to look and feel – right down to the detail of the multiple paper types he wanted to use. He spent some time with us on the factory floor looking at proofs and experimenting with different ways to get the result he wanted. Ultimately, we were delighted to be able to bring a complex project together and produce a beautiful book.”
